Court Orders Post-Mortem in Omar Badjie Death Case

Africa-Press – Gambia. A post-mortem examination has been officially ordered for the late Omar Badjie, following a formal request from his family. Principal Magistrate Anna O. Mendy granted the order after receiving the family’s affidavit and supporting documentation.

The process began yesterday morning when members of Badjie’s family were summoned to the Banjulinding Police Station. There, they expressed their request for a postmortem to CID Officer Sowe, acting under the instructions of Commissioner Kujabi, head of the West Coast Region.

Following this, the family completed a consent form, and eyewitnesses provided their accounts of the incident. A police officer from Banjulinding CID then accompanied Tumane Badjie—a family representative—along with other community members, to the Brikama Police Station. Tumane subsequently swore an affidavit before a Justice of the Peace.

The affidavit and formal request were presented to Principal Magistrate Mendy at the Brikama Magistrate Court, which resulted in the issuance of the post-mortem order to determine the cause of death.

Commissioner Kujabi later informed the family that an independent medical doctor had been appointed to conduct the examination, which is scheduled for tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. in Banjul.

In a related update, Commissioner Kujabi announced that the Crime Scene Management Unit will visit the alleged crime scene to carry out reconstruction and collect further evidence. He appealed to the public—especially the local youth—to cooperate with law enforcement, emphasizing that “in a pursuit for justice, there is a starting point and an ending.”

In a move described as a significant step toward transparency and accountability, four police officers alleged to be connected to the case have been arrested and remain in custody pending the outcome of the full investigation.
