President Barrow Urges Peaceful Expression and Respect

Africa-Press – Gambia. President Adama Barrow on Monday called on Gambians to reaffirm their commitment to peaceful engagement and lawful expression, stressing that the Constitution protects the right to protest but must be exercised responsibly.

“The right to protest peacefully is a cornerstone of our democracy—protected by our Constitution and respected by this government,” President Barrow said in a televised address to the nation.

He cautioned, however, that violence, destruction of property, and threats to public safety undermine the very freedoms citizens seek to protect and will be met with the full force of the law.

Highlighting the concerns of young people, whom he described as “the heart and hope of this country,” the president urged them to channel grievances through constructive and lawful means. He underscored the importance of democratic institutions—such as the National Assembly, the courts, and civil society organizations—as legitimate avenues for addressing complaints and resolving disputes.

Barrow assured Gambians, particularly the youth, that his administration is listening to their voices and placing their aspirations at the center of the national agenda. “Ours is a government open to dialogue: let us work together through established institutions and youth platforms—to resolve concerns peacefully and constructively,” he said.

While acknowledging that most citizens express themselves peacefully, Barrow warned that a minority may attempt to exploit such moments for personal or political gain. He called on Gambians not to allow division or unrest to derail national unity and progress.

The president further reaffirmed his government’s commitment to protecting lawful rights while ensuring accountability for those who incite or engage in violence. He urged the security forces to continue demonstrating professionalism, restraint, and respect for citizens’ rights.

“Uphold our Constitution, act with wisdom, and protect public order in a manner worthy of the confidence Gambians have placed in you,” he told the security services.

Barrow concluded by emphasizing shared responsibility for peace, stability, and development. “As we move forward, let unity, respect for one another, and commitment to our national values guide us. Only together, through peaceful engagement and shared responsibility, will we build the Gambia of our dreams,” he said.

The president also extended condolences to the family of Omar Badjie, noting, “Every life lost is a loss for our entire nation, and each injury is a reminder of the preciousness of peace.”
