Gambia Launches National Energy Compact

Africa-Press – Gambia. The Gambia officially launched its National Energy Compact on 24 September 2025, marking a major milestone in the country’s pursuit of universal electricity access. The launch took place at the Mission 300 (M300) Africa Energy Summit in New York, held alongside the United Nations General Assembly.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Petroleum, Energy, and Mines, the National Energy Compact outlines The Gambia’s ambitious plan to ensure electricity reaches every household by 2026, while contributing to the broader continental goal of providing power to an additional 300 million people across Africa by 2030. The Compact is part of the M300 initiative, a joint effort by the World Bank and the African Development Bank to accelerate energy access across the continent.

The Ministry highlighted that the Compact’s strategy is built around five pillars: infrastructure expansion, regional integration, last-mile access, private sector participation, and financial sustainability. The initiative also details a comprehensive pipeline of projects covering generation, transmission, distribution, off-grid solutions, and clean cooking initiatives.

The Ministry confirmed that implementing the Compact will require US$552 million in financing, drawn from public and private sources, as well as multilateral and philanthropic partners. Officials emphasized that the initiative will not only expand renewable energy capacity but also strengthen the resilience and reliability of the national power system.

“The launch of the National Energy Compact is a decisive step towards transforming The Gambia’s energy landscape,” the Ministry said in the release. “It reflects our commitment to providing electricity for all Gambians, supporting economic growth, and enhancing quality of life.”

The Ministry further called on all stakeholders, including government agencies, private investors, and development partners, to join forces in making the Compact a reality. The initiative is expected to accelerate the country’s energy transition and position The Gambia as a leader in sustainable energy development in West Africa.
