Africa-Press – Gambia. ANM Ousainu Darboe, leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), has expressed strong confidence that his party will emerge victorious in the 2026 presidential election, despite the recent departure of some prominent members.
Speaking during a meeting with UDP supporters in the diaspora, Darboe said the party has a proven record of resilience and unity in the face of internal challenges.
He recalled that in 2018, several key figures—including the president, Lamin Cham, and Alkali Conteh—left the UDP, yet the party remained strong and continued its political momentum.
“These were individuals who played major roles in the party’s political operations. When they left, many predicted the end of UDP. But nothing happened. Even when a sitting president left with all his influence, power, and resources, UDP remained unmoved,” Darboe stated.
The veteran politician also pointed to renewed grassroots support for his leadership, noting that delegations from Banjul and councillors from the Brikama Area Council have written letters reaffirming their loyalty to the party.
He further revealed that women from the Kombo region have also visited him to express their continued solidarity, underscoring the UDP’s enduring strength and broad-based support across the country.
