GLC Forms Panels to Enhance Legal Ethics Standards

Africa-Press – Gambia. The General Legal Council (GLC) has taken a major step toward reinforcing ethical standards and public confidence in The Gambia’s legal system with the establishment of three new disciplinary panels.

The initiative, announced on 15 October 2025, forms part of the Council’s ongoing reforms to promote professional discipline and accountability within the legal profession, in accordance with Section 28 of the Legal Practitioners (Amendment) Act, 2024.

The panels were formally constituted and sworn in by the Honourable Chief Justice and Chairperson of the General Legal Council, Justice Hassan B. Jallow, at his Chambers.

Chief Justice Jallow explained that the panels were “meticulously structured to ensure impartiality and expertise,” with each chaired by a High Court Judge and composed of two additional members—one representing the Public Bar and the other the Private Bar.

The appointed judges to head the panels are Justice Ebrima Jaiteh, Justice Sarah Aryee, and Justice Isatou Janneh. Their core mandate is to hear and determine complaints filed against legal practitioners by members of the public, in full compliance with the Legal Practitioners Act and the GLC’s regulatory functions.

In his remarks, Chief Justice Jallow emphasized the significance of the panels’ role, describing it as a “sacred duty” to uphold the integrity and ethical standards of the legal profession. He commended the members for accepting their appointments, noting that maintaining professional discipline is vital to sustaining public trust and confidence in the administration of justice.

He further underscored that the disciplinary process must remain “transparent, impartial, and consistent with due process and the rule of law,” urging members to perform their duties “without fear or favor, affection or ill-will.” The Chief Justice reminded them that every decision must reflect fidelity to truth, fairness, and justice, in accordance with the Constitution and the laws of The Gambia.

Delivering the vote of thanks on behalf of the panels, Justice Ebrima Jaiteh expressed appreciation for the Chief Justice’s leadership and commitment to strengthening institutional mechanisms for professional discipline.

Justice Jaiteh remarked that the establishment of the panels “marks a critical milestone in promoting ethical conduct, transparency, and accountability among members of the Bar.” He assured that the panels would execute their responsibilities diligently, impartially, and in the spirit of justice and the rule of law.

The ceremony concluded with Chief Justice Jallow expressing confidence that the competence, integrity, and experience of the appointed members would significantly contribute to preserving the dignity, reputation, and credibility of the legal profession in The Gambia.
