Africa-Press – Gambia. Leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), Ousainu Darboe, has called on Gambians to uphold peace and unity as the country moves toward the 2026 presidential election.

Speaking after Friday prayers in Birmingham, Darboe underscored the importance of national cohesion during the electoral process, warning against those who seek to profit from division and unrest.

“Elections can be tense everywhere, particularly in Africa, where some people thrive on violence and disunity,” he said. “There are individuals who make a living out of dividing our people—yet, in The Gambia, we are all connected. What we need most is unity.”

Darboe emphasized that while political differences are inevitable, they should be expressed through peaceful means. “We may follow different political paths, but we must do so peacefully because we are all working for our country. In doing so, there is no place for violence,” he added.

The UDP leader also urged Gambians to pray for the nation’s leaders—especially those with influence over public opinion—so they may exercise restraint and responsibility in their words and actions.

“Nothing should be told to our supporters other than that we are all brothers and sisters with a common goal—to build a better nation,” Darboe said. “This country belongs to all of us. We want what is best for The Gambia, but we cannot achieve that without mutual respect and appreciation. Our success depends on our unity.”
