Africa-Press – Gambia. Ousainu Darboe, leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), has urged party members to recognize the value of independent media, emphasizing that journalists are not adversaries.
Speaking at a meeting in Birmingham, England, Darboe said the media plays a critical role in informing the public and holding power to account. “They are not our enemies,” he stressed, noting that while the media’s role is to question and report, political actors have the responsibility to explain and persuade.
“Every public figure or organization will experience both favorable and unfavorable media coverage,” he added.
The Gambia has made notable strides in press freedom since the end of Yahya Jammeh’s regime. A landmark 2018 ruling declaring defamation unconstitutional represented a significant advancement for independent journalism.
Despite this progress, challenges remain. Journalists continue to face threats, intimidation, and harassment from various quarters—including some politicians and law enforcement officials—posing ongoing risks to the country’s efforts toward establishing a fully free press.
