Africa-Press – Gambia. Former President Yahya Jammeh has asserted in a WhatsApp audio message that current President Adama Barrow cannot bar him from returning to The Gambia, declaring, “Sooner or later, we will see who owns The Gambia, you or me.”
In the recording, Jammeh rejected the idea that he would return covertly, saying he would not “sneak into the country” and recalling the public nature of his departure. “The way I left, the whole world saw me going, red carpet to the plane. That is the way I will come out of the plane,” he said.
Jammeh also criticized the state of security in the country, alleging that levels of violent crime have risen dramatically and that prosecutions are not being pursued. He listed incidents such as rape, stabbings, hit-and-run collisions, and robberies, and said the country has become “a place for all the neighborhood criminals.”
Responding to past criticisms of his administration’s security measures, Jammeh said Gambians once condemned his use of checkpoints and the executions carried out under his rule. “Now you know the reason,” he said, adding that some who criticized those measures would come to regret it.
The remarks add to the ongoing debate within the country about governance, public security, and the political future.
