Africa-Press – Gambia. The Mayor of Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC), Talib Ahmed Bensouda, has characterized his political departure from the United Democratic Party (UDP) as a “divorce” rather than an act of betrayal.
In an interview on Thursday, Mayor Bensouda dismissed allegations of disloyalty, emphasizing that his decision to part ways with the UDP was not driven by personal ambition or political opportunism.
“These are old rivalries in the party. We have not betrayed anyone, and I laugh at the word betrayal. Betray you for what? For who? What has happened is a divorce; we did not go to someone else,” he explained.
He expressed disappointment with some UDP members who have resorted to insulting him and his colleagues despite their shared history and mutual respect.
Mayor Bensouda acknowledged the contributions both he and the party have made to each other over the years, noting that while the split was difficult, it was not a reflection of ingratitude or disloyalty. “I don’t think certain words should come out of certain people,” he added.
Nevertheless, the mayor accepted that such tensions are part of politics and stated that he has taken them in stride, given the democratic nature of the state.
He further explained that some of the rivalries date back to the 2021 elections, during which he dedicated both financial and human resources to support UDP leader Ousainu Darboe.
“I have given myself for the old man to win, and if he had won, it would have been the greatest day of my life,” he said.
