Africa-Press – Gambia. The Minister of Interior, Abdoulie Sanyang, has expressed strong confidence that the Gambia Police Force (GPF) is on course to become one of the most professional and effective security institutions in the subregion.

In an interview with The Fatu Network, Minister Sanyang highlighted the significant institutional and policy reforms that have been undertaken to strengthen the force’s capacity, professionalism, and accountability.

“I am still confident that the Gambia police force will be one of the best in the subregion,” he affirmed, emphasizing the ongoing transformation within the institution since his tenure as Inspector General of Police (IGP).

According to Sanyang, his extensive experience working with every Inspector General of Police over the past 22 years provided him with valuable insight into the force’s challenges and opportunities. This experience, he said, has guided his approach to institutional reform.

“We wanted to put in policies that will not be changed by anyone so that the police will be operating on policies. When I became the IGP because of the experience I have, I had worked with all the Inspector Generals we have in the past 22 years,” he said.

He also commended former IGP Yankuba Sonko for his pivotal role in professionalizing the police service by recruiting university graduates into the force. “Because at that time we only had a few educated individuals in the police force,” Sanyang noted.

While acknowledging that progress is evident, the minister cautioned that comprehensive institutional transformation is a gradual process.“That cannot be built in two or three years or so before Gambians will feel the impact, maybe the short-term impact, the medium-term impact, but the long-term impact, he said.

On the issue of promotions within the force, Minister Sanyang emphasized that all promotions are based strictly on merit and performance. “When it comes to work, I have no friends or family members. Promotions are earned through hard work and professionalism,” he asserted.

Minister Sanyang reaffirmed his ministry’s commitment to ensuring that the Gambia Police Force continues its reform trajectory, guided by transparency, discipline, and adherence to policy-driven governance.
