PASTEF Calls for Balance in Party Loyalty and Democracy

Africa-Press – Gambia. PASTEF The Gambia has urged politicians to balance loyalty and ambition in promoting democracy, as blind allegiance or unchecked individual ambition has the potential to derail efforts in political rebirth and institutional advancement.

PRO and Communications Officer of PASTEF, Mr. Mayerror Sidibeh, made the call during an interview with this newspaper held recently.

He cautioned politicians who have become accustomed to lip-service without realising their exposure to the public, considering political dynamics by publicly aligning with someone’s intentions without seeking clarity or alternative options reflects political foresight.

“In a democratic context, party loyalty should not take precedence over individual ambition. Rather, both should complement each other. Healthy democracies thrive on open competition, renewal, and the free exchange of ideas, and that loyalty to democratic values should outweigh blind allegiance and unchecked ambition”, he admonished.

He added that political circumstances often reveal deeper systemic challenges, such as generational tensions between established leadership and emerging reformist voices, and these tensions reflect the ongoing struggles over succession and renewal within political organizations. Leadership uncertainty, he said, is imminent when young political folks are hesitant to express honest opinions for fear of being labelled as betrayals and anti-party activists.

Mr. Sidibeh further said that internal disputes are leaking to the public due to a lack of trust and communication gaps because of poor leadership.

He concluded that politicians should always take cognisant of political dynamics even though they may intend to perform well.
