Africa-Press – Gambia. Talib Ahmed Bensouda, the leader of Unite Movement for Change (UMC), has promised to transform the political ideology of the country, an idea that seeks to prevent political parties from being controlled by individualistic ideas and collapsing after their leaders.
Addressing the UMC’s town hall youth meeting at Semega Janneh Hall recently, the KM Mayor said that if UMC were to transform into a political party, the responsibilities of a party leader and secretary general must be separated to decentralize power.
Talib pointed out that they have learnt from the mistakes made by other political parties in the past that have collapsed after they relinquished power. He said the continuity of a political party should not rest on the shoulders of one individual, citing that has been the trend of politics in the country.
“When Sir Dawda Jawara lost power, the PPP collapsed. APRC also collapsed when Jammeh lost power. We heard President Barrow say that if he does not contest the third term, his party will collapse. We don’t want this to happen to UMC. That’s why we must take a different direction,” he affirms.
He urges supporters of UMC to campaign in their respective communities and encourage people to join the Movement, not to follow him.
The former UDP organising secretary states that politics is not about using force, not about insults, not about mockery, but it is about a dialogue with the people.
He blames the former governments and the current administration for what he calls “failure” to address youth unemployment and the empowerment of women.
“The Gambia’s problem since independence is that our governments have failed to create jobs for youths. Women are neglected. That’s the reason our youth are taking the irregular migration journey because they have lost hope in the system,” he said.
He maintains that the UMC will do away with the politics of deception and will remain truthful in their campaigns.
