Africa-Press – Gambia. More than 800 supporters from various political parties, including the United Democratic Party (UDP), PDOIS, Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), APP Sobeya, and others, have reportedly defected to President Adama Barrow’s National People’s Party (NPP).

The mass defection took place on Wednesday in Bundung and is seen as part of the ruling party’s efforts to consolidate support ahead of the December 2026 presidential elections.

Welcoming the new members, Presidential Adviser Dou Sanno commended their decision and assured them of a place within the party.

“Do not be afraid or worried. You have joined a leader who is merciful, compassionate, and respects human rights,” Sanno said.

NPP National Women’s Mobilizer Aja Maimuna Baldeh reaffirmed women’s commitment to President Barrow’s re-election bid.

“We want to tell the president that 2026 is a defining moment. To those who have joined us today, know that you are home. Politics requires patience—the president cannot satisfy everyone, but his focus remains on national development in areas such as education, electricity, and clean water,” she stated.

Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Sukai Jallow said their move was motivated by confidence in President Barrow’s leadership and a shared vision for national unity.

“As head of Compin Boka Halat, we are here to support the NPP, unite under one mission, and contribute to the progress of our beloved nation,” Jallow said.
