Ousainu Darboe Vows to Fight for a Better Gambia

Africa-Press – Gambia. Ousainu Darboe, the veteran leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), reaffirmed his long-standing commitment to political reform on Friday, telling supporters that he remains steadfast in his decades-long struggle to build “a better Gambia.”

Speaking at a party gathering in the southern Kombo village of Jambanjelly, Mr. Darboe reflected on a political career spanning nearly three decades, saying his mission for good governance began in 1996, when he was 48 years old.

“Since 1996, I have been telling you our stand is for you to be governed by a good government,” Mr. Darboe told the crowd. “The mission I have been on since 1996 is still not completed.”

Mr. Darboe, a former vice president and longtime opposition figure, said that while The Gambia has made progress by ending the authoritarian rule of former President Yahya Jammeh, the struggle for transparency and accountability continues.

He sharply criticized President Adama Barrow’s administration, accusing it of widespread corruption and mismanagement.

“Adama Barrow’s government is the most corrupt government in this world,” he declared, adding that the country’s wealth and resources were being plundered.

Mr. Darboe said his party’s current mission is to replace what he called a “useless government” with one that serves the interests of ordinary Gambians.

“If I call them a useless government, it pains them,” he said. “But they are indeed a useless government. If they do any good, I will call them a good government.”

The UDP leader urged opposition parties and civic groups to unite in what he described as a shared effort to “redeem” the country from corruption and moral decay. “Let us together redeem this country,” he said. “We cannot afford to leave The Gambia as it is for our future children. If we do so, history will condemn us.”

Mr. Darboe, one of the country’s most prominent political figures since the 1990s, has positioned himself as a central voice in the opposition landscape ahead of future elections.
