Africa-Press – Gambia. President Adama Barrow declared on Tuesday that former President Yahya Jammeh would not be allowed to return to The Gambia without his authorization, dismissing any possibility of Jammeh’s comeback—even, he said, if the former leader were to enlist the help of “his jinns, marabouts, and witches.”
Speaking to villagers during his ongoing Meet the People Tour in the North Bank settlement of Badibou Salikenni, Mr. Barrow said Jammeh “does not have the power, the tactics, the bravery, or the spirituality” to make a political or physical return.
“He knows the powers associated with the presidency,” Mr. Barrow said, his tone alternating between defiance and humor. “He knows the power President Barrow has.”
The Gambian leader went on to challenge Jammeh’s supporters, remarking that “the roads are wide open, planes and vehicles are operating every day.” Then, with a brief laugh, he added, “Let him return and see what will happen.”
In a moment that drew laughter from the audience, Mr. Barrow likened what some perceive as bravery to “a foolish man who removes his shirt in the middle of the street, grabs a cutlass, and asks people to fight him.”
“That is not bravery,” he said.
Mr. Barrow also reminded the crowd that it was he who defeated Jammeh in the 2016 election, ending his 22-year rule. “It was I who removed him from power,” the president said. “It is the same people in this country.”
