Barrow Warns Salikenni Residents about Support Needs

Africa-Press – Gambia. President Adama Barrow has cautioned residents of Badibou Salikenni that his government’s continued support for their community depends on their reciprocal cooperation, warning that his patience and generosity have limits.

“If I am the only one providing for you and you are not providing for me, in the long run, I will also get tired,” Mr. Barrow said during a joint meeting of residents from the Lower and Central Badibou constituencies, part of his ongoing “Meet the People” nationwide tour.

The president reminded the crowd that Salikenni already benefits from his administration, citing that both a minister and an ambassador in his government hail from the village. “The people of Salikenni have gained a lot from my government,” he said.

Mr. Barrow urged residents to accept “the will of Almighty Allah” and to join hands with his administration in advancing national development. “The world does not remain in one direction,” he said. “What Allah has decided, no human being can prevent.”

Drawing a contrast with his predecessor, former President Yahya Jammeh, Mr. Barrow said his approach to leadership was different. “The former president used to say he provided for those who supported him. That kind of thinking is limited,” he said. “Every Gambian pays taxes, and every Gambian deserves development.”

He recalled that some individuals had tried to dissuade him from building a hospital in Salikenni because of the area’s perceived opposition stance. “I told them I am elected by Gambians, and Salikenni is part of The Gambia,” the president said. “It is their right to development.”

Without naming anyone, Mr. Barrow also criticized a National Assembly member whom he accused of discouraging residents from attending the meeting. He described such behavior as “ignorance,” saying his tour was not political but aimed at hearing citizens’ concerns and identifying solutions.

The president pointed to infrastructure projects his administration has completed in the area, including the construction of a hospital and roads. “Let the National Assembly member show what he has done like this,” Mr. Barrow challenged.

Mr. Barrow’s remarks come amid a politically charged atmosphere as he continues his tour across the country, addressing communities and promoting his government’s development agenda.
