Standards Bureau Trains on Good Manufacturing Practices

Africa-Press – Gambia. The Gambia Standards Bureau (TGSB) has organized an awareness training on Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) Standards for Cosmetics to promote safe production and quality assurance within the growing cosmetics industry.

The engagement, held on Thursday, 13th November, at the Metzy Hotel, aimed to raise awareness and understanding of the GAMS ISO 22716 standard, which outlines best practices for the production, control, storage, and distribution of cosmetic products.

In his remarks, the Director of Standardization, Mr. Ebrima Jallow, described the seminar as an important step towards strengthening quality and safety in the cosmetics sector. He said the bureau, as the national body responsible for standardization, conformity assessment, and metrology, is committed to promoting product quality, consumer safety, and industrial competitiveness.

Mr. Jallow notes that the Bureau operates about 15 technical committees developing standards across different sectors.

“Today, we are here to sensitize you on the standards for Good Manufacturing Practices for Cosmetic Products (GAMS ISO 22716) developed by the Technical Committee on Chemicals,” he said.

He added that the seminar represented a milestone in efforts to build quality infrastructure for the cosmetics industry, which continued to play an important role in both the economy and public health.

Mr. Jallow reaffirmed the Bureau’s commitment to work closely with businesses and stakeholders to promote quality, safety, and compliance across all sectors of the national economy.

Speaking at the event, Mariama Jorbateh, a trainer on cosmetics and entrepreneurship, described the cosmetics business as “very marketable and lucrative,” but noted that it remained new in The Gambia.

“Without having a standard to guide what we should do in terms of production, packaging, and storage, it will be a big issue,” she said.

She explained that while cosmetic production is expanding rapidly, especially through social media platforms like TikTok, many people lack the proper knowledge to produce and package products safely.

“This is why the Standards Bureau and its partners found it necessary to create a standard to govern this sector,” Jorbateh added.

The training brought together entrepreneurs, producers, and key stakeholders to promote awareness of GMP standards and improve the safety and quality of locally made cosmetic products.
