Dr Ceesay Criticizes Unite Movement Leaders' Interests

Africa-Press – Gambia. Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, Minister of Information, Media, and Broadcasting Services, sharply criticized the recently launched political initiative, the United Movement for Change (UMC), accusing its leaders of prioritizing family interests over the Gambian public.

In an interview with West Coast Radio, Dr. Ceesay singled out Talib Ahmed Bensouda, Mayor of the Kanifing Municipal Council, the movement’s founder, saying the initiative primarily serves the Bensouda family rather than Gambians at large.

“I heard him say, ‘This movement is for Gambians.’ No. This movement is for the Bensouda family; Gambians are being used as a stepping stone to get to power,” Dr. Ceesay said.

He expressed concern that if Talib were elected, he would surround himself with family members and a network of influential businesspeople, whom Dr. Ceesay described as “ruthless capitalists,” potentially diverting the nation’s resources while leaving ordinary citizens in hardship.

“It is using Gambians to benefit the Bensouda family to get to power,” he said. “But Gambians are not sleeping. They are awake, and they will not succumb to those kinds of promises.”

Dr. Ceesay urged voters to reject the UMC in upcoming elections, warning that electing its leaders would constitute a “grave mistake in contemporary politics.”

“I’m warning the Gambians, if they mistakenly, in a grave manner vote people like Talib and his ilk to power in this country, it will be the greatest mistake in contemporary politics,” he said.

He also criticized the movement’s composition, suggesting that some members are motivated more by personal gain than by a commitment to national development.
