Barrow Urges Foni to Renew Support for Ruling Party

Africa-Press – Gambia. President Adama Barrow has urged residents of Foni to realign themselves with his government, while issuing a stern warning to critics—particularly supporters of the APRC No-To Alliance and allies of former President Yahya Jammeh—to operate within the confines of the law.

Speaking in Foni Bullock during his constitutionally mandated Meet the People’s Tour, President Barrow said the region has historically not been known for opposition politics. “Foni is a place we have never known to be an opposition stronghold… Return to what you were 50 years ago,” he told the gathering. He assured the community of his administration’s commitment to equitable development, adding, “This government cares about Foni. Whatever is the right of the Gambian people is also the right of Foni, and you will have it under my government.”

The president highlighted key development gains in the region, noting that 32 villages in Foni have been connected to electricity during his eight years in office. “In my eight years, 32 villages benefited from electricity—and I am not from Foni,” he said. Barrow added that the era of Jammeh’s political dominance was over, stressing that his government would not be intimidated by anyone.

Barrow cautioned political actors to conduct their activities lawfully. “Whatever you do, let it be within the law… If not, we will confront you,” he warned. He accused certain Jammeh loyalists of misleading residents, saying, “I want to clarify things so people understand what is happening. If you push me to the limit, I will speak. We want democracy to prevail, but it must come with respect for the law.”

The president also commented on Jammeh’s current circumstances in exile, claiming he is well informed about the former leader’s condition. “I know the situation he is in… He no longer has power, wealth, or health. God has given that power to me,” Barrow said, asserting that he is “the only one” who can authorize Jammeh’s return to The Gambia.
