Africa-Press – Gambia. Human rights activist Madi Jobarteh and security analyst David Kujabi, a former police officer, have called on the Gambian government to provide more detailed information regarding the arrest of Sanna Manjang, a notorious former member of ex-President Yahya Jammeh’s paramilitary hit squad.
Speaking on the “Verified” podcast, Jobarteh said the government’s initial statement on Manjang’s arrest was “very preliminary” and expressed hope for a more comprehensive update in the coming days.
“So I would suppose since the incident happened during the weekend, the government will give us more comprehensive information this week,” he said.
Jobarteh emphasized the importance of transparency, noting that Gambians deserve to know specifics such as the location of the arrest, including the village, region, or dwelling, as well as the individuals involved. He also addressed circulating reports suggesting that Manjang had been arrested alongside another “Junglers,” Nuha Badjie, clarifying that these claims are now considered inaccurate.
“Even if the others arrested are not Gambians, it is crucial for the public to know who these individuals are,” Jobarteh added.
The activist described his reaction to Manjang’s arrest as mixed, highlighting both relief and concern due to conflicting reports about the circumstances. “In one sense it gives relief and encouragement that the perpetrators are being arrested, but also there are many questions because I have seen conflicting accounts that he was planning a coup. But we realize these people were busy with livelihood issues. So which is which?” He asked.
