Africa-Press – Gambia. PASTEF The Gambia has expressed full support for human rights lawyer and political advocate Assan Martin, who recently urged Gambian political actors to adopt maturity, discipline, and issue-based dialogue as the country approaches the 2026 electoral cycle.

In a statement, PASTEF said Martin’s message is timely, highlighting concerns over the rising tide of personal attacks and emotionally charged political exchanges, which the group says are undermining the quality of national debate.

“The rise of personal attacks does not advance our democracy; it weakens it,” the statement read, echoing Martin’s call for a political climate rooted in responsibility and constructive engagement.

PASTEF stressed that the opposition has a special duty to lead by example. With ongoing national challenges—from governance and agriculture to health, education, and public services—the movement said Gambians expect leaders who demonstrate integrity, ethical conduct, and a credible track record of service.

The statement added that bigotry, intolerance, and reactionary politics fail to build the future Gambians aspire to achieve.

Martin also reminded the public that many political actors have, at different times, contributed to the country’s current challenges. PASTEF agreed, emphasizing the need for honest reflection, humility, and issue-driven discussions rather than political posturing.

“As the desire for change grows, leaders must remain focused and committed to practical, people-centered solutions,” the group said.

As the 2026 elections take shape, PASTEF called for a renewed political culture grounded in calm and thoughtful engagement. It urged all stakeholders—including political parties, civil society, and citizens—to rise above personal rivalries and uphold stability, democracy, and the shared aspirations of Gambians.
