Africa-Press – Gambia. The Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS) and Special Olympics Gambia yesterday signed a historic Solidarity Agreement aimed at promoting the inclusion of persons with intellectual disabilities in sports and educational programs across the country. The signing ceremony took place at the Quadrangle in Banjul and marks The Gambia’s entry into the Global Coalition for Inclusion.
The coalition, launched at the Special Olympics World Games in Berlin, now has 19 member countries, with The Gambia becoming the fifth African nation to join. The initiative seeks to integrate children with and without disabilities in schools, sports, and leadership programs, fostering tolerance, respect, and unity.
Shawn Ferguson, Chief Global Government Relations Officer of Special Olympics International, commended The Gambia’s commitment, describing it as a “real leadership role in the global movement.” He highlighted the transformative effect of inclusive sports, noting that it allows children with disabilities to discover their skills while teaching those without disabilities empathy, tolerance, and the value of friendship.
Charles Nyambé, President and Managing Director of Special Olympics Africa, emphasized the initiative’s practical and outcome-driven approach. “We don’t just sign agreements. We ensure training, provide resources for teachers, and measure the impact on school environments over time,” he said.
The agreement is expected to benefit more than 2,700 students in 85 schools, promoting collaborative learning, leadership opportunities, and sports participation for all children, regardless of ability. Officials noted that inclusive sports programs in other countries have reduced bullying, improved school environments, and raised academic performance by positively changing attitudes among teachers and students.
Minister of Youth and Sports Bakary Y. Badjie welcomed the partnership, noting that the program aligns with The Gambia’s commitments under the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. He called on schools, communities, and local authorities to fully support the initiative.
The signing of the Solidarity Agreement represents a major milestone for persons with disabilities in The Gambia, creating pathways for greater participation in sports, education, and leadership. Officials said the initiative will be closely monitored, with long-term commitments to ensure measurable impact and continuous improvement.
With this agreement, The Gambia aims to set a benchmark for inclusive sports and education in Africa, demonstrating how government and international partners can collaborate to empower marginalized communities.
