President Barrow Hails Media’S Role in Nation-Building

Africa-Press – Gambia. President Adama Barrow has praised the media for its critical role in nation-building during the annual Presidential Media Dinner held at the State House grounds on Friday.

“We are gathered here to express gratitude for another successful year of engagements with the media and their collective contribution to nation-building,” President Barrow said. He described the annual event as a “golden opportunity to renew, revisit, and redirect our shared responsibility in advancing the cause of the nation through communication, dialogue, and education.”

The President highlighted the central role of the media in democratic governance, noting that the event, first initiated last year, was now firmly established in his annual calendar. “The context and objectives of this event align closely with the principles and values of the media fraternity and our governance structures,” he said.

President Barrow contrasted The Gambia’s media landscape with global trends, pointing out that while much of the world’s news focuses on conflict and crises, political news dominates local headlines, reflecting the country’s democratic vibrancy, peace, and security.

He urged media stakeholders, including owners, editors, talk show hosts, and reporters, to continue projecting a positive image of the country. “We may have divergent views, but the way we moderate our differences can enhance our diplomatic and networking efforts, attract investments, and stimulate economic growth,” he said.

President Barrow also cited progress in media freedom since 2017, when The Gambia was ranked 122 out of 180 countries under restrictive conditions. “This year, Reporters Without Borders ranked The Gambia 58 out of 180 in the 2025 World Press Freedom Index. Let us not take these achievements for granted; they are precious,” he added.

Under the current administration, numerous media houses—including radio, television, print, and online platforms—have been registered with the Ministry of Justice and operate freely under the supervision of the Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services.

President Barrow highlighted key reforms over the past eight years, including the enactment of the Access to Information Act, the establishment of the Media Commission, and the Cyber Security Act, aimed at promoting professionalism and upholding democratic principles.
