NPP Contests Independent and UDP in By-Elections

Africa-Press – Gambia. The National People’s Party (NPP) will contest the January 10, 2026, by-elections in Bantanjang and Kaifa Wards, facing two independent candidates in Bantanjang Ward and the United Democratic Party (UDP) in Kaiaf Ward.

In Bantanjang Ward, the independent candidates are Bakary M. Manga and Alagie Njie, while Abdoulie Badjie represents the NPP. In Kaiaf Ward, Omar Touray is contesting on the NPP ticket, with Sulayman Sanneh standing as the UDP candidate.

Although the official campaign period is scheduled to run from December 29, 2025, to January 8, 2026, tensions have already begun to surface in Bantanjang Ward, where personal attacks have reportedly emerged between officials of the NPP and the APRC No-To-Alliance faction.

The by-elections in both wards were necessitated by the deaths of the sitting councillors earlier this year.
