Africa-Press – Gambia. Yonna Group on Thursday recognized one of its employees, Malick Gibba, as Staff Member of the Year for 2025, awarding him D50,000 in appreciation of what the company described as exceptional performance and commitment.

The award was presented during the company’s annual staff retreat and awards ceremony held at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre in Bijilo, an event organized to acknowledge the contributions of Yonna Group’s workforce.

Mr. Gibba, who works in the company’s information technology unit, said in an interview after the ceremony that his achievement was the result of strong institutional support and mentorship from colleagues and management.

He described information technology as a field he has been passionate about since childhood and credited Yonna Group for providing both the resources and professional guidance necessary for growth. “A company like Yonna is rare,” he said, citing access to mentorship and encouragement to develop his full potential.

“What motivates me basically is the job that I do because the IT field has been a field that I’ve built an interest in since childhood,” he said. “A company like Yonna is rare to find, where you get the mentorship you need, you get the resources you need, and then you are allowed to go all out with all the potential that you have.”

Mr. Gibba singled out his IT coordinator for particular praise, saying the guidance he has received has been critical as he builds a career in a rapidly evolving sector.

“I am very grateful to them, especially the IT coordinator, for the way he is guiding me in the IT field. As a young guy or as a young man that is just coming up into the IT industry, I really need very good guidance from someone who has the experience and the capacity to envision the future in technology and help guide me through it,” he said.

He emphasized that success in technology requires resilience, commitment, and focus, noting that the industry demands constant learning and adaptation. “The key quality that I would say is resilience. Resilience, commitment, and focus. You need that to excel in IT because nothing comes easy.”

He also highlighted the dynamic nature of the IT industry. “In the IT world, it is so dynamic that you would need to always be on your toes if you want to be in line with technology,” he said.

He also commended Yonna Group’s leadership for fostering an open and supportive working environment, describing senior management as accessible and responsive. “The CEO and the general manager are unlike other institutions. You can reach out to them any time of the day or night.”

The ceremony was attended by the company’s chief executive officer, Sheriffo Touray, other senior officials, stakeholders, and a representative of the Office of the Inspector General of Police.
