Africa-Press – Gambia. The Minister of Transport, Works, and Infrastructure (MOTWI) has described 2026 as a landmark year for road development in The Gambia, with the majority of ongoing projects across the country expected to be completed and inaugurated within the year.
Speaking to journalists on the first day of his rural roads inspection tour in the North Bank Region, Honourable Minister highlighted government achievements in 2025, noting that several major urban and rural road projects were executed last year, with some already inaugurated by His Excellency President Adama Barrow.
The Minister said that between 90 and 95 percent of the 365 kilometres of roads currently under construction are expected to be completed and inaugurated in 2026.
“Hopefully, by the end of Ramadan, we will inaugurate many of these roads,” he stated, citing the Brufut–Madiana Road, Kiang West roads, CRR North roads, parts of the Upper River Region, and roads in the West Coast Region, particularly in Foni and the Kombos. He added that all or a significant portion of the Kabada Road is also expected to be inaugurated within the year.
Describing 2026 as a “phenomenal year” for the government, the Minister said it will mark the realization of substantial investments in nationwide road infrastructure.
Beyond inaugurations, he announced that new road projects would be launched from March or April 2026, following ongoing feasibility studies covering 902 kilometres of roads, of which over 150 kilometres have already been surveyed.
“Once the detailed designs are completed, the President will launch these projects and lay their foundation stones. This process will continue until the entire 902 kilometres are completed,” he added.
The Minister underscored that the current road development programme is unprecedented not only in The Gambia but also in the sub-region.
“Considering the size of our economy and country, I have not seen any West African nation embark on such an extensive road infrastructure programme,” he said.
He further noted that, in addition to the 365 kilometres under construction and the 902 kilometres in the pipeline, an additional 200 kilometres of roads are being constructed by GIRAV under the Ministry of Agriculture.
“When taken together, over 1,000 kilometres of roads are being built simultaneously across the country, which is truly phenomenal,” the Minister concluded.
