The Senegalese army has announced that two of its soldiers from the Ecomig Mission in The Gambia died on Monday during clashes with elements from the Casamance Democratic Forces Movement, MFDC, while 9 other soldiers are missing.

According to the Senegalese army, a rebel was killed while 2 others were captured. The incident happened on Monday when the soldiers allegedly came under fire after chasing a vehicle suspected to be carrying timber across the border. Meanwhile, Senegalese President Macky Sall has expressed his condolence to the families of the soldiers who died during the clash.

“I extend my condolences to the families of our brave soldiers who died during a security operation, fighting against the traffic of wood in the south of Bwiam, as part of the CEDEAO mission in Gambia. Peace to their souls. I want prompt recovery for the injured,” President Sall tweeted.
