Africa-Press – Gambia. Banjul Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe, a member of the United Democratic Party (UDP), has reaffirmed her loyalty to the party amid circulating speculation that she might join the National People’s Party (NPP).
In an interview with West Coast Radio on Tuesday, Ms. Lowe dismissed claims of a possible defection. “They have been saying that I will leave the party, and they are the ones who left,” she said, referring to former UDP members who recently departed.
She also addressed allegations that she shared information with President Adama Barrow, describing them as unfounded claims propagated by a faction within the UDP. “There has been a stigma since 2019. A particular group had an agenda, and they think that I am the obstacle,” she said. “They were the very people saying that every day I go to the State House for dinner, lunch, and breakfast. They sell that to our own people, the UDPians, and they buy it.”
Ms. Lowe suggested that her gender has contributed to skepticism regarding her loyalty. “Because I am a woman, they did not believe me, and they believed that person over me. I am very consistent, and I won’t damage anyone’s image because I want to be in a position,” she added.
The mayor reaffirmed her commitment to the UDP, describing it as the party where she was politically nurtured. “An institution where I was born, raised, and know; if that institution is going to collapse, it will not be from me. The best thing to do is take steps and observe,” she said.
On her future political involvement, Ms. Lowe stated that she has deliberately stayed out of active politics for strategic reasons. “They say I should come in the middle, and I said no; when it is time to politic, I will come and do politics for my party, but right now I won’t join,” she said.
