Africa-Press – Gambia. Ousainou Darboe, opposition leader has enjoined young Gambians to embrace the opportunity of the supplementary voter registration period and get registered in order to take charge of the imminent change of government in the country.
The United Democratic Party (UDP) flag-bearer’s call was made in his recent address to the nation on Friday as the Independent Electoral Commission continued its voter registration process across the country. He says the process enables young people to install a government of their choice, stressing that it gives the voice and power to the young generation to put people in place who will really take charge of the affairs of this country.
Darboe states that if young people fail to vote; any government that is installed if it becomes a bad government, they should be held responsible. “And I’m sure you do not want to take any blame for putting in office a government that the people of the Gambia do not deserve.” He added.
The UDP Leader urges anyone who will turn 18 on the day of the election to go out and acquire voter’s card.
On the issuance of attestations, Darboe cautions all authorities to be very careful in issuing attestations to claimants, implying that if one attested to the eligibility of any claimant, and is found by a revising court to be false, the guarantors are putting themselves in deep trouble.
“So I would advise all of us not to do anything that will bastardise our electoral list. Let us attest only to those who are genuinely eligible to be issued with voter’s cards,” he advised.
Darboe observes that the young people of this country are complaining. “Young people of this country are crying that corruption is so endemic in this country that the fabric of Gambian society is being destroyed.” He added that the only way to ameliorate this was to go out and acquire voter’s cards by bringing an end to the unbearable situation in the country.
