IEC Declares 2016 Voter Cards Invalid for Upcoming Elections

Africa-Press – Gambia. The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said on Monday that voter identification cards issued in 2016 are invalid and cannot be used for the 2026–2027 electoral cycle, amid what it described as misinformation online.

The Commission stated that the 2016 voter cards were declared null and void before the 2021 General Registration of Voters and therefore have no legal effect in upcoming elections.

It said only voter cards issued during the 2021 registration exercise remain valid for the current electoral cycle, adding that registered voters from 2021 should not re-register during the ongoing supplementary exercise.

The supplementary voter registration, running from 8 April to 21 May 2026, is open to citizens who were not registered in 2021 and those who have reached or will reach the age of 18 by 5 December 2026.

The IEC urged the public to rely on official channels for electoral information, warning against the circulation of false or misleading content online.
