Africa-Press – Gambia. The Government of The Gambia has renewed its commitment to the full implementation and accessibility of the Access to Information (ATI) Law, as the world marks International Day for Universal Access to Information.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Information, Media, and Broadcasting Services, the government emphasized its dedication to openness, transparency, and accountability.“We will continue to prioritize capacity building and multi-stakeholder collaboration with civil society, the media, and development partners to ensure that the ATI law is fully implemented and accessible to all Gambians,” The ministry stated.
This year’s commemoration is held under the theme “Ensuring Access to Environmental Information in the Digital Age.” The ministry highlighted that the theme underscores the importance of reliable information not only for democracy and good governance, but also for protecting the environment and advancing sustainable development.
The statement noted that The Gambia has made notable progress in expanding access to information, citing the enactment of the Access to Information Act, 2021, and the creation of the Information Commission. These developments, it said, place the country among progressive nations that view the right to information as a cornerstone of good governance.
According to the ministry, the establishment of the Information Commission has further strengthened institutional capacity to uphold this right, ensuring its effective enforcement.“On this occasion, we reaffirm our dedication to building a transparent, inclusive, and sustainable society where every citizen has access to information, including environmental information, in this digital age so that together, we can protect our democracy, our environment, and our future,” the statement concluded.
