Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>It\u2019s Wednesday, January 12, 2022. Ebou Adams is about to make history. The Gambia are about to make history. Adams has been selected by head coach Tom Saintfiet to start in The Gambia\u2019s first ever African Cup of Nations fixture. Mauritania are their opponents \u2013 certainly a winnable opening game for the tournament’s lowest-ranked side.Adams\u2019 anxiety isn\u2019t helped by the fact that kick-off in Limbe has been delayed by 45 minutes due to controversial scenes in the previous game between Mali and Tunisia, where referee Janny Sikazwe twice signalled for full-time before the game was scheduled to finish.<\/p>\n

This is the biggest moment of Adams\u2019 career. A player who usually oozes confidence on the pitch is shaking in the dressing room at the Limbe Stadium, but he finds a way of keeping himself cool. Candy Crush Saga.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt helps me problem-solve and keep calm. It worked as well!\u201d he laughs. \u201cBefore the game I was like \u2018right, I\u2019m scared\u2019, but as soon as we walked out for the anthems, I was cool.\u201dAdams played the full 90 minutes as The Gambia won their first ever African Cup of Nations game \u2013 with Ablie Jallow the scorer in a cagey 1-0 victory.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was such a surreal moment,\u201d he says. \u201cGetting called up to the squad is probably my best feeling ever, but to get selected for the first game, and to win it \u2013 I can\u2019t describe it. I\u2019m still smiling about it to this day.That first whistle to start the first game off – that\u2019s when it all started to sink in for me. That\u2019s when I was like, \u2018you\u2019re playing with the big boys now. You\u2019re playing in a massive tournament.\u2019 Winning that game settled me massively.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe gaffer (Rob Edwards) messaged me afterwards saying \u2018how do you feel?\u2019, I replied straight away saying, \u2018how do you think I did?\u2019 and he said, \u2018you fitted in like a glove. It\u2019s like you\u2019ve been playing at big tournaments your whole life.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

It was only the start. Adams also featured in The Gambia\u2019s next two group games as they qualified from their group without losing. They scored stoppage-time goals in both games, claiming a 1-1 draw against Mali and beating Tunisia 1-0.<\/p>\n

However, a substitute appearance against Tunisia proved to be the end of Adams\u2019 tournament. The Gambia beat Guinea 1-0 in the round of 16, but the 26-year-old missed out on the matchday squad with a minor collarbone injury.<\/p>\n

He returned to the squad against tournament-hosts Cameroon in the quarter-finals, but was an unused substitute in the defeat. Adams rates Mali midfielder Yves Bissouma as his toughest opponent during the competition, although he was in awe of Cameroon and Al Nassr striker Vincent Aboubakar during the quarter-final clash.<\/p>\n

\u201cBissouma from Brighton – it is frightening how laid back he was on the ball,\u201d Adams recalls. \u201cHe is so good and he can just explode with and without the ball. It was a good challenge playing against him. I enjoyed it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t get to play against him, but the Cameroon striker, Aboubakar – his movement was unbelievable. I think he\u2019s world-class.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe calibre of players you play against is amazing. I\u2019ve gone from playing League Two football against Ibou Touray at Salford City, to being his team-mate and playing with him against Premier League players, Champions League players and Europa League players.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aboubakar starred as Karl Toto Ekambi bagged a brace to give Cameroon a 2-0 win over the tournament\u2019s overachievers in the quarter-finals. It was a heroic effort from The Gambia to make it that far.<\/p>\n

Back in England, Forest Green boss Edwards was quickly in contact with Adams and approached him about playing in Rovers\u2019 game away at Port Vale just a couple of days later.<\/p>\n

Adams didn\u2019t take much convincing and he was quickly onboard with the idea.\u201cAfter the Cameroon game, I sent over my flight details to Moons (James Mooney, head of football operations), who then spoke to Rob, and he called me and confirmed if I wanted to be involved,\u201d he says. \u201cPlaying for him and the management staff – I couldn\u2019t say no.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a crazy journey. When I first got told about it, I thought \u2018am I actually going to be able to do this?\u2019 Somehow, I managed to get enough sleep on the plane. I flew from Douala to Paris, and I arrived in Paris at seven o\u2019clock on Tuesday morning. I then got a 10 o\u2019clock flight to London, got straight off the plane and got a car up to Stoke.\u201d<\/p>\n

With Rovers 1-0 down at half-time, Edwards called upon Adams to replace Regan Hendry. He helped wrestle the game in Forest Green\u2019s favour, as Rovers earned a valuable point at a blustery Vale Park.<\/p>\n

He\u2019d started the day in Cameroon and ended it by returning to League Two action on a cold Tuesday night in Stoke. \u201cI left Cameroon in a T-shirt! When I arrived back in the UK, I thought \u2018what am I doing?\u2019 I got over it and enjoyed the wind and the cold. As they say, a Tuesday night in Stoke isn\u2019t easy, is it?<\/p>\n

\u201cI have to thank Forest Green for getting me a car and a place to stay. As soon as I got into the hotel room, I slept like a baby. Luckily somebody woke me up, because if they didn\u2019t then I\u2019d still be sleeping now!\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite helping The Gambia reach the last eight of a major international tournament, Adams now has a job on his hands to get back into Forest Green starting XI. In his absence, Rovers conceded just one goal in five league games, losing none. They coped admirably without their all-action midfielder.\u201cI didn\u2019t keep my eyes off Forest Green whilst I was away,\u201d admits Adams. \u201cI\u2019ve been messaging the boys, they\u2019ve been messaging me, I\u2019ve been speaking to the management staff and Noah (Dougherty, content executive) as well. I\u2019m so happy that they have kept the unbeaten run going.\u201d<\/p>\n

Edwards is adamant that Adams will be a far better player for his major tournament experience, and when Forest Green\u2019s fixture list eventually quietens down, the Rovers boss is keen to sit down and pick his brain about what he learned whilst in Cameroon.<\/p>\n

\u201cI learned different things from different players,\u201d says Adams. \u201cI soaked everything up like a sponge. There is so much I can take from the competition.\u201d<\/p>\n
