Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>Climate activist Finlay Pringle doesn\u2019t mince his words. Boris Johnson? \u201cI hate him,\u201d says the 14-year-old from Ullapool in the Scottish Highlands, before correcting himself. \u201cOK, in polite terms, I severely disagree with him. He\u2019s like the British version of Trump. When he speaks, he sounds like an Oompa-Loompa. Everything is just slogans.\u201d<\/p>\n

And his future? \u201cI\u2019m angry,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019ve been cheated out of my future. People are dying from climate change. The Australian wildfires claimed lives. People in the Maldives will lose their homes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pringle is furious, sometimes hilariously, matter-of-factly so. He is also one of the longest-running school strikers in the UK. At the time of writing, he has been striking for an hour every Friday morning for 164 weeks. The worst thing about striking, he says, isn\u2019t standing in the winter snow or sleet, but the highland midges in summer. \u201cI know they\u2019re important for the ecosystem,\u201d he says,\u201cbut, man, do I hate them. They\u2019re awful. I get bitten loads.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some people have assumed his environment-conscious parents forced him into activism \u2013 but that frustrates Pringle. \u201cIt\u2019s always my decision,\u201d he says. \u201cIf they\u2019re doing a beach clean and I say I don\u2019t want to do it, I don\u2019t have to.\u201dPringle became an environmental activist at the age of 10. It all started because a water company was planning to dump sewage into Loch Gairloch. \u201cI wasn\u2019t trying to be an activist,\u201d he says. \u201cI was just trying to do the right thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pringle loves the sea and often goes snorkelling with his family. \u201cWhen you\u2019re in and out of the water,\u201d he says, \u201cyou\u2019re consumed by it. Nothing else is going on. All you see is what is in front of you. And when you see plastic floating in the water, there\u2019s no beating around the bush.\u201d<\/p>\n

He campaigned with other members of his local community and helped secure a U-turn: the water company pledged not to dump raw sewage in the loch. \u201cGetting a positive result helped motivate me,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Pringle\u2019s most famous campaign to date brought him head to head with TV survivalist Bear Grylls. In 2018, Grylls opened a dive experience at the NEC in Birmingham. Visitors pay to go diving in a tank with blacktip reef and nurse sharks. The Shark Trust partnered with Grylls on the project, from which it receives donations. Pringle was appalled: \u201cSharks and captivity don\u2019t go together,\u201d he says. (The Shark Trust disagreed, saying in a statement: \u201cTens of thousands of people have dived with and learned about sharks at the Bear Grylls Adventure \u2013 they go away with a desire to support shark conservation.\u201d)When Pringle found out about the attraction, he began \u201cranting about it on social media\u201d. He attracted national headlines after telling Grylls he \u201csucked\u201d and was the \u201cworst chief Scout\u201d.Oh god,\u201d Pringle recalls, \u201cthat was a can of worms.\u201d A spokesperson for Bear Grylls Adventure said: \u201cWe\u2019ve partnered with Shark Trust and will donate a proportion of each ticket sold to strengthen the charity\u2019s undisputable contribution to safeguarding the wild population of sharks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sharks are Pringle\u2019s favourite animal. \u201cThey\u2019re my true passion,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s so wrong, the way we treat them. They deserve our respect, not our fear.\u201d His favourites are, in order: goblin sharks (\u201cthey look freaky as hell\u201d), cookiecutter sharks (\u201cthey are tiny but can prey on much bigger things\u201d) and Greenland sharks (\u201cthey can live up to 400 years\u201d).Pringle is scathing about the solutions to climate change advocated by world leaders. \u201cYou know only one country in the world is on track to meet the Paris climate agreement?\u201d Pringle says. \u201cYou know which one it is? Gambia! If this tiny, poor country can do it, why can\u2019t we?\u201d The UK is a joke, he says with scorn. \u201cCoal mining in Cumbria. Expanding several airports in the UK. Cutting down ancient woodland for HS2. The list goes on and on.\u201dPringle plans to be a marine biologist, so when I ask him what he\u2019d like his treat to be, he suggests a pair of binoculars to use on his wildlife-spotting trips. \u201cWatching animals and birds was one of the few things that helped get me through lockdown,\u201d he says. \u201cJust being able to go out on that daily walk, and see the gulls.\u201d<\/p>\n

Swarovski Optik provides a pair of pocket binoculars. He takes them out for a spin almost immediately. \u201cIt\u2019s shocking how good they are for their size,\u201d he says. He plans to go whale-spotting once the weather is good enough. \u201cWhales always disappear behind the cliffs,\u201d Pringle says, \u201cso you have to run to see them. But these binoculars will be perfect for seeing them. They\u2019re brilliant.\u201dwe have a small favour to ask.
