Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>Days into Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, Russian troops have faced resistance from Ukrainian forces as they threaten major cities of Kyiv and Kharkiv and drive hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian residents to flee to neighboring countries.NATO remains against no-fly zone to avoid having to \u2018actively fight against Russian forces,\u2019 a top US general says \u2014 2:28 p.m.<\/p>\n

The United States and the other 29 countries that make up NATO remain unwilling to establish a no-fly zone over Ukraine, President Joe Biden\u2019s senior military adviser said Saturday, even as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine continues to push the alliance to more forcefully protect his country from the carnage wrought by repeated Russian airstrikes in recent days.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf a no-fly zone was declared, that means someone would have to enforce it,\u201d said the adviser, Gen. Mark Milley, chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. \u201cThat means someone would have to go in and actively fight against Russian forces.\u201d<\/p>\n

Milley was in Latvia visiting U.S. troops deployed to the heart of NATO\u2019s so-called eastern flank when he laid out in stark terms to reporters why the alliance had rejected Zelenskyy\u2019s calls for NATO to set up and enforce a no-fly zone.<\/p>\n
