Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>The Nelson Mandela Foundation says it is imperative that channels for peacemaking, negotiation and dialogue be pursued, urgently. The Nelson Mandela Foundation has called for the South African government to be clear on where it stands on the Russian invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been two weeks since Russia launched what it calls a \u2018military operation\u2019 in Ukraine. A number of Ukrainanians have died, others have deceased and many have fled the country.<\/p>\n

NELSON MANDELA FOUNDATION CALLS FOR SA GOVT TO TAKE A STANCE<\/p>\n

In a statement, the Foundation said it has urged the South African government to show leadership at this critical moment and press for a ceasefire so that rigorous negotiations on the future can be mapped out.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have indicated to the government our availability to assist in this regard. A lesson to be relearned is that whether we are talking about Ukraine or about the many other crises around the world, when the rule of law is cast aside and strategies of violence adopted, the resulting misery is far more devastating among weak and vulnerable countries.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is imperative that channels for peacemaking, negotiation and dialogue be pursued urgently and relentlessly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nelson Mandela Foundation<\/p>\n

SA ABSTAINS IN UN VOTE TO CONDEMN RUSSIA<\/p>\n

South Africa along with its fellow BRICS members, India and China abstained from the United Nations (UN) General Assembly vote to condemn Russia on Wednesday night, 2 March.<\/p>\n

In a statement issued via DIRCO, the South African government said both Ukraine and Russia needed to uphold international, humanitarian and human rights law \u2013 as well as the principles of the UN Charter, including sovereignty and territorial integrity.<\/p>\n

European Union (EU) Ambassador to South Africa, Riina Kionka, said South Africa\u2019s abstention in the vote was \u201cpuzzling.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re puzzled because [South Africa] sees itself and is seen by the world as a country championing human rights, international law and the rule of law,\u201d said Kionka.<\/p>\n

The Democratic Alliance said it was appalled by the decision. DA shadow minister for DIRCO Darren Bergman, said the vote was the perfect opportunity for the South African government to take \u201ca clear and moral stand that would gain them ground.\u201d<\/p>\n
