Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>The International Open University (IOU) has graduated 452 students from various fields of studies. They were conferred certificates in diploma and bachelor\u2019s degree courses. It was the 8th and first offline convocation ceremony since the founding of the institution some 15 years ago.<\/p>\n

Addressing the gathering of parents, teachers including well-wishers, Dr. Bilal Philips, chancellor and founder, commended the graduates. \u201cThe knowledge and the moral character you have gained is the real basis of long lasting fundamental change which our country and communities need today and in the future,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He urged the graduates to use the knowledge they gained to impact society in a positive manner. \u201cThe nation needs your service and you must not fail the people who have done so much to help you reach this stage. Go out there and serve as ambassadors of the University,\u201d the Jamaican Canadian Islamic teacher, challenged.<\/p>\n

A key component to success, Dr. Philips said, \u201cis patience and perseverance.\u201d A motivational speaker and author, he told the students that it requires effort, \u201c[a] clear vision, strong determination and discipline\u201d to achieve life goals.<\/p>\n

Aminata Jaiteh, director of the centre for language and professional studies at the University, stated: \u201cThe sky is the stepping stone, if you [graduates] really want it [success], then you will have to work for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

She urged them to keep up \u201cthe good work of nation building\u201d. Guest speaker and higher education minister, Badara Joof, praised the \u2018tireless efforts\u2019 of the graduating students. The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Dr. Cherno Barry, highlighted the importance of online learning.<\/p>\n

In a joint message, the graduates commended the university for creating the opportunity for young Gambians and non-Gambians alike to have access to education from their comfort zones, and for exposing them to other people around the globe.<\/p>\n
