Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>WTOP’s Jason Fraley previews New African Film Fest at AFI Silver Theatre (Part 1)<\/p>\n

We can\u2019t claim to be true film buffs until we\u2019ve explored what every continent has to offer.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, we live in the nation\u2019s capital with events to expand our horizons like the New African Film Festival, which hits the AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring, Maryland.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Washington, D.C., area is an international city \u2026 but in the early 2000s there was no African film festival in the area at all, so Mwiza [Munthali] and I had this grand idea,\u201d co-founder Kishere Mbuya told WTOP. \u201cEssentially, we wanted to bring new African films that captured the complexities, contours and challenges of the continent.\u201d<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s festival will screen 28 films from 17 countries from March 18 to 31.<\/p>\n

Another goal was to provide a space for filmmakers, because there\u2019s some great films that have come out of the continent historically, but they have not been distributed as widely,\u201d Munthali said. \u201cIt was also the beginnings of what is termed as Nollywood, which has sparked this revolution in African filmmaking the last 20-some years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Opening night brings Saul Williams and Anisia Uzeyman\u2019s \u201cNeptune Frost.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a nice Afrofuturistic vision,\u201d Munthali said. \u201cIt\u2019s a film from Rwanda set in the Burundi. \u2026 It\u2019s a relationship between a miner and an intersex runaway. \u2026 Also looking at the exploitation of coltan, mined heavily in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Congo has the biggest reserves of coltan in the world, like 80%, which we use in computers, cellphones.\u201dYou can also see Chad\u2019s official Oscar submission \u201cLingui, the Sacred Bonds.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s about a young teenager who\u2019s pregnant struggling trying to get an abortion in a country and a society where that\u2019s prohibited,\u201d Mbuya said. Munthali added, \u201cMahamat-Saleh Haroun is a fantastic filmmaker. We\u2019ve had two of his films in the festival before.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nana Mensah screens her Tribeca award-winning comedy \u201cQueen of Glory.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA doctoral student [had] plans to run off with her married boyfriend, but then her mom died and she inherited this bookstore and she now has to contend with all of that,\u201d Mubya said. Munthali added, \u201cIt\u2019s set here in the U.S. in New York City, but it\u2019s a diaspora story, a Ghanaian diaspora story. \u2026 It did very well at Tribeca. It won an award at Tribeca.\u201d<\/p>\n

Congolese director Jean Luc Herbulot\u2019s presents the genre-shifting \u201cSaloum.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a Quentin Tarantino western type of film,\u201d Munthali said. \u201cIt\u2019s like a western action thriller but in the African setting. It\u2019s dealing with this drug lord from Guinea-Bissau.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tunisian filmmaker Leyla Bouzid screens the Cannes film \u201cA Tale of Love and Desire.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTwo young kids falling in love, juxtaposing their desires with their conservative upbringing,\u201d Mbuya said. Munthali added, \u201cIt\u2019s set in Paris and the male was born in France, his parents are from Algeria, and the female has come to France [from] Tunisia. \u2026 They have a class together \u2026 dealing with 12th century Arabic exotic literature.\u201d<\/p>\n

There\u2019s also the Ethiopian documentaries \u201cAmong Us Women\u201d and \u201cStand Up My Beauty.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Stand Up My Beauty\u2019 was a film that showcased a singer who wanted to tell stories through her artistry and she ends up telling the story of this homeless poet with her children,\u201d Mbuya said. Munthali added, \u201c\u2018Among Us Women\u2019 is a very powerful film \u2026 looking at health care \u2026 how traditional midwives deal with child birth in this society.\u201d<\/p>\n

Senegal-born French actress-turned-director A\u00efssa Ma\u00efga brings her acclaimed water crisis documentary \u201cAbove Water\u201d screening on March 22 for World Water Day.\u201cIt\u2019s a fantastic film,\u201d Munthali said. \u201cIt\u2019s really highlighting the lack of water in a village in Niger \u2026 and the issue of climate change as well, how this water crisis is because there\u2019s been a long drought in the area, so she\u2019s using this film to speak on those issues.\u201d<\/p>\n
