Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>Many an insult has been hurled at Vladimir Putin since he invaded Ukraine a fortnight ago, causing chaos, heartbreak and death. A bloodstained aggressor. A 21st-century Stalin. A total fucking dickhead. Beelzebub.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook at the face of Putin. You will see the devil,\u201d one US commentator opined on Wednesday as a maternity hospital was bombed in the city of Mariupol.<\/p>\n

But for the Venezuelan pundit Alberto Aranguibel, Putin\u2019s 24 February invasion was \u201cla guerra necesaria\u201d \u2013 the necessary war.<\/p>\n

The Chinese academic Wang Shuo saw it as \u201ca US-created crisis\u201d. \u201cThe strategic selfishness of the US has brought more disasters to the world,\u201d Wang grumbled on Wednesday in the state-run Global Times, blaming Washington\u2019s \u201cselfish and short-sighted action\u201d for plunging Ukraine into war.<\/p>\n

And for the editorial board at Mexico\u2019s La Jornada newspaper, it was time to abandon the unhelpful fantasy that Putin\u2019s \u201cambition and wickedness\u201d was the sole culprit and face \u201cthe difficult truth\u201d of how Nato\u2019s eastward push had paved the way for disaster.The west\u2019s horror at Putin\u2019s actions should be placed in the context of the shameful history of western powers\u2019 involvement in illegal wars,\u201d said an article in the prominent South African newspaper the Daily Maverick, pondering South Africa\u2019s perceived neutral position on the war.<\/p>\n

\u201cHas the west\u2019s response to the Ukraine invasion been hypocritical? Unequivocally: yes,\u201d the author argued, before also condemning Putin\u2019s \u201cunjustifiable and illegal onslaught on a sovereign state\u201d.<\/p>\n

Much of the coverage exploring western hypocrisy has come from predictable quarters: state-run media outlets in authoritarian Russia allies such as Venezuela, North Korea, Syria, Cuba and China, where pro-regime journalists have largely shunned the word \u201cinvasion\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen will they sanction the US for its crimes and invasions?\u201d Telesur\u2019s Venezuela correspondent, Madelein Garc\u00eda, wondered this week after Joe Biden announced a ban on Russian oil imports.<\/p>\n

The Chavista commentator Aranguibel painted Putin not as an aggressor but the victim of \u201cthe most brutal and intense demonisation campaign ever seen\u201d. \u201c[The campaign is] perhaps only comparable to the one that\u2019s been waged against president Nicol\u00e1s Maduro for at least a decade,\u201d Aranguibel wrote in \u00daltimas Noticias, a pro-government tabloid, although the anti-US tone in Venezuela\u2019s pro-regime media appeared to soften after talks with Biden officials last Saturday.<\/p>\n

China\u2019s official news agency, Xinhua, calls the conflict \u201cthe Ukraine situation\u201d. while North Korea\u2019s state-run KCNA agency has called western sanctions an \u201cabuse of power\u201d.The root cause of the Ukraine crisis totally lies in the hegemonic policy of the US and the west, which enforce themselves in high-handedness and abuse of power against other countries,\u201d KCNA quoted a foreign ministry official as saying.<\/p>\n

In Taipei, meanwhile, media outlets pondered if Russia\u2019s actions set a worrying precedent for Taiwan, where the threat of an invasion by China looms large. Headlines asked: \u201cUkraine today, Taiwan tomorrow?\u201d<\/p>\n

Granma, the mouthpiece for Cuba\u2019s Communist party, slammed the \u201cYankee empire\u2019s ruthless campaign\u201d against Russia while downplaying the conflict as a \u201cdesacuerdo\u201d (disagreement) between Moscow and Kyiv.<\/p>\n

In Syria, state media have been fully behind Bashar al-Assad, who has backed Putin\u2019s war from the outset after Russia helped him secure his own position in Syria over the last seven years.<\/p>\n

But criticism of western double standards has not been limited to state media outlets in Russian allies.<\/p>\n

An opinion article in the South African daily the Mail & Guardian called the conflict \u201csoaked in contradictions\u201d, criticising western media coverage and government responses that appeared to frame the war in Ukraine as worse than other conflicts outside Europe.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven as we deplore the violence and the loss of life in Ukraine resulting from the Russian intervention \u2026 it is valuable to step back and look at how the rest of the world may perceive this conflict,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n

\u201cFear of domination, potential enemies spur Russia\u2019s invasion,\u201d read a headline in the Guardian in Nigeria, reflecting widely held beliefs about perceived Nato expansionist aims in Europe being partially to blame.<\/p>\n

Yan Boechat, a Brazilian journalist who is reporting on the humanitarian crisis from Kyiv, scoffed at the \u201ccynical, hypocritical\u201d tears being shed by the US secretary of state, Antony Blinken, over victims of the Ukraine conflict, given the carnage his country\u2019s military had caused in Iraq.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnder Obama, the US was just as cruel in Mosul as Putin. Nobody was left to mourn the dead. US planes killed them all,\u201d Boechat tweeted, recalling how he had stumbled over body parts while reporting from the devastated Iraqi city six months after the war there.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, cruelty, barbarity and injustice aren\u2019t unique to Putin and the Russians,\u201d the Brazilian journalist concluded. \u201cVictims are mourned depending on the aggressor. [But] they are all victims: civilians who are Ukrainian, Iraqi, Syrian, Afghan.\u201d<\/p>\n
