Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>The Defence minister Tuesday on West Coast Radio said the government is concerned about the situation next door and the impacts it is having on Gambians in that area.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is something that I want to clearly put across, that this government is really concerned and will at no cost compromise or take for granted, peace, security and tranquility of this country particularly our families in the Fonis.<\/p>\n

He assured that President Barrow as well as his government is committed to providing security to the people of Foni region in these uncertain times. \u201cThe president His Excellency has ordered the deployment of our troops in the area, to reassure our people and particularly the Foni settlements along the border of the government\u2019s unreserved commitment to their safety and security.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said President Barrow further demonstrated his commitment to that effect by ordering the immediate disbursement of D5 million to mitigate the pressing needs of the people in the area.<\/p>\n

Since the clash between the MFDC Rebels and the Senegalese soldiers began on 13 March, 2022, thousands of Gambian families have been internally displaced as they continue to move for safety.<\/p>\n

The country has also witnessed an influx of refugees from Cassamance into Gambian territory. Although the war is between Senegal and the MFDC rebels, bullets have landed in some villages in the Gambia end and these have instilled fear among those villagers. According to the National Disaster Management Agency NDMA, 9,975 people have been affected since the clashes began early this month.<\/p>\n
