Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>The wrangling between one of the friendliest allies in Africa was made public recently when UK Home Secretary Priti Patel, reportedly told the Sun newspaper in London that \u201cThe Gambia was the first on the Home Secretary\u2019s list\u201d over the current matter.<\/p>\n

The Home Secretary revealed that Boris Johnson\u2019s government will not only \u201cslow visa application\u201d from any countries that is reluctant to take back \u201ccriminals\u201d but will also \u201cimpose penalties\u201d for refusing to cooperate.<\/p>\n

Since the spat, The Point continues to uncover the reason behind such drastic action as well as the raison d\u2019etre for the undiplomatic incident, especially when a Gambian diplomat told this correspondent that \u201cwe are surprised by the disclosure.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nonetheless, the Home Secretary insisted that the government will \u201cimpose visa penalties on countries who don’t cooperate on deportations\u2026including those who are abusing our hospitality.\u201d It is also revealed that The Gambia took \u201conly four criminals\u201d and decided to ignore the rest.<\/p>\n

However, responding to this correspondent, a Gambian diplomat said: \u201cOff course we replied to the complaint. Also, we accepted those we can identify as Gambian nationals\u2026However, what we cannot do is to accept people described as criminals who are not verified as Gambians…\u201d<\/p>\n

However, other section of the media is arguing that \u201cthe right-wing press has taken the country hostage\u2026vulnerable people including asylum seekers are rejected and ostracised\u2026while others are accepted and welcomed\u201d.<\/p>\n

A Home office spokesperson responding to our inquiries said: \u201cThe Gambia is one of our most trusted allies in that region\u2026We rightly pointed out that the UK takes back its citizens who commit crimes abroad. Therefore, we are equally asking not only The Gambia, but for others to also do the same\u201d.<\/p>\n

So far there are thousands of prisoners across the country awaiting deportation prompting the Home Secretary to also pledge to fix the “fundamentally broken asylum system…and make it firm and fair.”<\/p>\n
