Tehran is using the IRGC as \u201cits chosen instrument for spreading the new militancy,\u201d he addedLONDON: Western countries should not overlook Iran\u2019s growing missile capabilities, a former Israeli representative to the UN has warned.<\/p>\n

Writing in the Sunday Telegraph, Dore Gold said the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal, has failed to prevent the country from building a stockpile of ballistic missiles.<\/p>\n

As a result, Iran\u2019s missile capacity has grown \u201cboth in number and quality, including the range and accuracy of its missile force,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Gold drew a comparison with the UN\u2019s treatment of the Saddam Hussein regime in Iraq, where resolutions required that ballistic missiles with a range greater than 150 km be \u201cremoved or destroyed under international supervision.\u201d<\/p>\n

That condition has not been applied to Iran, meaning that it \u201cis already altering the balance of power in the region,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

This was demonstrated in the 2020 attack on the US-controlled Al-Asad Airbase in Iraq and the activities of Yemen\u2019s Iran-backed Houthi militia, Gold added.<\/p>\n

He noted comments by US Central Command Cmdr. Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, who said this month that Iran\u2019s 3,000 ballistic missiles have become \u201cthe greatest threat to Middle Eastern security.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gold argued that rather than moderating Iran\u2019s behavior, the JCPOA has had the opposite effect in licensing Tehran to \u201crapidly increase the number of Shiite militias\u201d and making the Middle East \u201cfar more dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said the removal of Western economic sanctions on Iran \u201cprepared the groundwork for funding militias across the region, especially in Iraq, Syria and Yemen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tehran is using the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as \u201cits chosen instrument for spreading the new militancy,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Under the JCPOA, Gold said, the IRGC was stripped of its terrorist label \u2014 a decision that was \u201cmorally and factually wrong\u201d and likely to empower the network \u201cto conduct more attacks,\u201d referencing its rocket strike on the US Consulate in Irbil earlier this month.<\/p>\n

\u201cWithout some major change in Iranian intentions towards Western states, European countries are not likely to remain merely political rivals,\u201d Gold concluded. \u201cThey could soon become the very real targets of Iran\u2019s increasingly robust missile forces.\u201d<\/p>\n
