Gambian judges and lawyers are currently attending a training seminar on the practice procedure and jurisprudence of the Ecowas Community Court of Justice, CCJ.<\/p>\n
The workshop started yesterday at the Kairaba Beach Hotel with the objective of acquainting participants with the organisation, jurisdiction procedure, and jurisprudence of the CCJ.<\/p>\n
During the three-day sessions participants will be lectured on the extent of the human rights mandate of the court in relations with national jurisdictions among other topics.<\/p>\n
There will also be session on procedure as to who can sue and be sued, review of judgments, community civil service and the Ecowas Community Law.<\/p>\n
Addressing the opening ceremony, Justice Gibril Janneh spoke on behalf of the Chief Justice.<\/p>\n
He opined that though Ecowas has no specific human rights instruments, almost all cases filed before the court on allegations of human rights violations root the claims on the African Charter on Human and People\u2019s Rights.<\/p>\n
Justice Keikura Bangura of the CCJ urged the participants to take advantage of the sessions to understand the court\u2019s procedures, promising that the workshop will be very interactive.<\/p>\n
