Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>As Russia faced setbacks on the battlefield on Sunday, both Nordic nations said that they would apply for membership to the alliance. Here are the latest developments in the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

With Russia\u2019s forces in retreat around the northeastern city of Kharkiv and its offensive in the eastern Donbas region faltering, Moscow is also confronting the prospect of a significant expansion of NATO that would bring the military alliance closer to its borders than at any time since the collapse of the Soviet Union.<\/p>\n

Finland\u2019s government announced on Sunday that the nation would apply for NATO membership, hours before Sweden\u2019s governing party announced that it also supported joining the alliance. If accepted into NATO, as is widely expected, both Nordic nations would cast aside a long history of military nonalignment, as they look to the Western alliance for protection against Russian aggression. NATO leaders said they would accelerate Finland and Sweden’s membership bids, though the process of bringing them fully into the alliance will take time.In recent days, Ukrainian forces have pushed Russian troops back from the outskirts of Kharkiv, Ukraine\u2019s second largest city, but civilians in frontline villages are still under fire and short of supplies.<\/p>\n

Volunteers on Sunday raced into these villages, situated just a few miles from Russian lines in northeastern Ukraine.BERLIN \u2014 Turkey\u2019s foreign minister said on Sunday that his government would not oppose applications by Finland and Sweden to join NATO, but announced a list of demands that it would like to see the two countries meet.<\/p>\n

Mevlut Cavusoglu, the foreign minister, said the demands included that the nations pledge to drop bans on the export of some goods to Turkey, to provide security guarantees to Turkey and to prevent the Kurdistan Workers\u2019 Party, or P.K.K., from operating in those countries.Ukraine\u2019s Eurovision winner releases a music video filmed in the rubble.<\/p>\n

Sweden\u2019s governing Social Democratic Party announced on Sunday that it would vote in favor of joining NATO, all but guaranteeing that the Nordic nation would end 200 years of neutrality and seek membership in the powerful Western military alliance.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe Social Democrats believe the best for Sweden and the Swedish people\u2019s security is to join NATO,\u201d Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said in a news conference in Stockholm on Sunday evening.<\/p>\n

\u201cMilitary nonalignment has served Sweden well, but our conclusion is that it won\u2019t serve us equally well in the future,\u201d she added. \u201cThis is not a decision to be taken lightly.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Social Democratic Party, Sweden\u2019s largest party and head of a minority coalition, has supported Swedish neutrality since before the collapse of the Soviet Union and favored Swedish military nonalignment even after Stockholm joined the European Union.<\/p>\n

But Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine has shifted public opinion significantly, in part because neighboring Finland \u2014 long a strategic partner of Sweden\u2019s \u2014 has also moved swiftly to drop nonalignment and favor joining NATO.<\/p>\n

Both countries have been shaken by the Russian invasion and have judged that close cooperation with NATO, without membership, did not include the guarantee of collective security that the alliance provides.<\/p>\n

As late as March 8, two weeks after the invasion began, Ms. Andersson, Sweden\u2019s Social Democratic leader, said that her party was opposed to joining NATO. But lawmakers were pulled along by Finland and shifting public opinion, along with a degree of anguish and discussions with party members in all 26 districts in the country.<\/p>\n

Its announcement should guarantee a broad majority in Sweden\u2019s Parliament because much of the political opposition is already in favor of applying for NATO membership.<\/p>\n

Sweden is scheduled to hold a parliamentary debate on Monday, the same day as Finland.<\/p>\n

Some Swedish parties continue to oppose joining NATO, arguing that membership brings heavy obligations as well as guarantees, and would narrow or even foreclose Sweden\u2019s ability to choose when and how to act in the world.<\/p>\n

There is also anxiety about Sweden, long a proponent of nuclear disarmament, joining a nuclear alliance, although some member states, including Norway, have opted out of hosting any nuclear weapons or foreign bases.<\/p>\n

Both Sweden\u2019s Left Party and the Greens will vote against membership while condemning Russia\u2019s invasion, arguing that Sweden should improve its own defenses and maintain military nonalignment, which has kept the country out of war since 1814.<\/p>\n

Ali Esbati, a legislator for the Left Party, said that joining NATO carried new risks for Sweden\u2019s security. \u201cWe want to keep our freedom to decide what conflicts we want to get involved in,\u201d he said, \u201cand it\u2019s not clear that being part of a military alliance with a nuclear doctrine makes Sweden safer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Throwing aside a 200-year-old doctrine now seems wrong, Mr. Esbati added. \u201cThe whole process has been bizarrely forced,\u201d with no parliamentary debate.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt would be reasonable to put this to an electoral test, if not an election, then a referendum,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Marta Stenevi of the Greens said she worried about the authoritarian nature of some current NATO members, like Turkey and Hungary.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to actively participate in the crises we choose,\u201d Ms. Stenevi said. \u201cTo keep a strong voice for peace and democracy is easier outside the alliance.\u201d But if Sweden joins, she added, \u201cwe need a much broader discussion of how we continue to work for our values.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both Sweden and Finland have been promised bilateral security assistance from the United States and Britain in the interim before full membership, a process that could take six months to a year.<\/p>\n
