Sign up for The Alabama Education Lab\u2019s free, weekly<a href=\"https:\/\/link.al.com\/join\/6fp\/signup\"> newsletter, Ed Chat<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"inarticle-1\"><\/a>With djembe drums in hand, young campers circled a clearing of land in Shelby County, tucked between a sparkling pond and shady trees.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"inarticle-2\"><\/a>\u201cListen and watch,\u201d said Aboubacar Sylla, a master percussionist and teacher of West African song and dance, as he drummed a slow, steady beat.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"inarticle-3\"><\/a>Sylla\u2019s words became a gentle refrain throughout the day, as the students, who are part of a weeklong Juneteenth camp, learned the fundamentals of West African art forms from skilled instructors.<a name=\"RJIX4EYOK5HV7HE44ZSAZ3CKYQ\"><\/a>Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, marks the date when \u2013 two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed \u2013 a general informed enslaved Texans of their freedom. It was named a federal holiday in 2021.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_RJIX4EYOK5HV7HE44ZSAZ3CKYQ\"><\/a>The holiday is now recognized in Alabama, but beyond requiring second graders to learn about national holidays, Juneteenth isn\u2019t mentioned in any state standards.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_EBDXXVKM4ZE3JOGLTL7BQSFJ4Y\"><\/a>To fill that gap, some educators rely on supplemental resources, or primary documents, experts say. Others, like Elvie Schooley, offer immersive experiences like the Juneteenth camp to help youth understand the cultural significance of the holiday.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_XFCGWL2EIBDDVGZANWPZHVONK4\"><\/a>Schooley directs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drumtheprogram.org\/\">DRUM the Program<\/a>, a community-based cultural arts program that educates students on West African drum and dance, and also fosters social emotional skills.<a name=\"E2H7ILEUXFBKTHNLOD3T5PQPCM\"><\/a>As an African American youth growing up here, there was no access to art,\u201d said Schooley, an Alabama native who began to study African folkloric drum and dance after a series of trips to Africa. \u201cBut I realized that it was so vital to adults to see themselves as confident, as powerful, as capable, and to stimulate their creativity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_E2H7ILEUXFBKTHNLOD3T5PQPCM\"><\/a>I had so much fun the other day at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/drumtheprogram?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@drumtheprogram<\/a>\u2019s 3rd annual Juneteenth camp, where campers learned a variety of West African art forms. Such a treat to watch their final performance today. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/pNivQzChWC\">pic.twitter.com\/pNivQzChWC<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Rebecca Griesbach (@greezbock) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/greezbock\/status\/1538275952018575360?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 18, 2022<\/a><br \/>\n<a name=\"InContent_Center_ZWHUVVN6KRFMVOGHH5PB5BPHDE\"><\/a>Schooley previously worked as a cultural community developer in Austin, Texas, and moved back to Alabama in 2018. A year later, she started the Juneteenth camp, which served about 20 children ages 8 to 16. Now in its third year, 32 campers signed up for the weeklong camp, from a range of backgrounds.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_E36DFNRISZFGZJKJLWUK2UERJE\"><\/a>The camp is free to attend and is sponsored this year by Walmart, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the Birmingham Urban League by way of Sen. Rodger Smitherman. Its model for fine arts, behavioral health and physical education was also recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alabamaachieves.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/COMM_RFI_202234Summer-Learning-Program-RFI-SPRING-2022_V1.0.pdf\">vetted and approved<\/a> by the Alabama State Department of Education.<a name=\"ONQJW3LWN5BIBEPMVLLWBXXUFY\"><\/a>Some campers are from homeschool groups, and others attend schools in surrounding counties. DRUM also offers community classes at the University of Montevallo\u2019s Parnell Library, an after-school program, and plans to work with Jefferson County Schools next fall.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_ONQJW3LWN5BIBEPMVLLWBXXUFY\"><\/a>\u201cThey come to this program and they\u2019re fully present,\u201d Schooley said of the campers. \u201cThey\u2019re like sponges.\u201d<a name=\"IGJVCT5VIFAGXL5I4YM4SV5GDA\"><\/a>In between sets on one day of the camp, Sylla coached a pair of teens, who were playing tall, narrow drums called doundouns, to branch out and try new rhythms.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_IGJVCT5VIFAGXL5I4YM4SV5GDA\"><\/a>\u201cI just need to remember to keep going,\u201d Simeon, 16, said to Wali, 17.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_JQSIRUMCDFAZ3A7SGBRI74RLYA\"><\/a>The drum circle usually lasts for about an hour each morning, and the art form is infused throughout the day. It\u2019s a confidence building exercise that, studies show, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mic.com\/articles\/116674\/science-shows-drummers-are-fitter-and-happier-than-everyone-else#:~:text=Extended%20periods%20of%20drumming%20release,won't%20%E2%80%94%20keep%20drumming.\">helps release endorphins<\/a> and can enhance other motor and psychosocial skills.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_2453IL667VBMJHWKHNONH2D564\"><\/a>Drumming is also a key part of the campers\u2019 final performance, which was just two days away. As the group wrapped up, Schooley reminded them to wear all white Saturday, a color typically worn for festive occasions by some cultures in West Africa.<a name=\"DC6WJUGOFVAV5DUVKBIIBDDTQA\"><\/a>Mickey Mouse can come, too,\u201d Schooley said to a younger camper, whose stuffed animal sat in a chair beside him.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_DC6WJUGOFVAV5DUVKBIIBDDTQA\"><\/a>Throughout the day, campers honed a variety of art forms, paying homage to Choctaw land and learning about their own ancestry as well. While younger students gardened near the main house, teenagers worked on a spoken word performance \u2013 another element that they\u2019d include in Saturday\u2019s production.<a name=\"GIZ35HQLSRACHIYRYXXDVPTRO4\"><\/a>Maybe the step has like a travel to it?\u201d Ojeya Cruz-Banks suggested to a group of teens, who were working on a spoken word act.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_GIZ35HQLSRACHIYRYXXDVPTRO4\"><\/a>Cruz-Banks, called \u201cDr. O\u201d by the campers, is an associate professor of dance and Black studies at Denison University, and has been working with Schooley for nearly 20 years to study West African art forms.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_43VPDKX2KJBYTO5R3TEDGBJHKY\"><\/a>Instructors also help campers set individual goals, and stress the importance of working together. For this particular group, the goal was to get those final movements down for the big performance.<a name=\"W57IFS37ZBDXFHL2CYOPE35WJY\"><\/a>We could touch shoulders!\u201d one teen suggested, as others tried to incorporate memories of their time at camp (\u201cHow about a fish movement?\u201d \u201cWaves?\u201d) into the performance.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_W57IFS37ZBDXFHL2CYOPE35WJY\"><\/a>A counselor led five campers \u2013 Wali, Zakhaa, Ora, Ken and Simeon \u2013 in a final rehearsal for the day. Facing the glimmer of the pond, they raised their hands in unison and recited the last verse: I am from the community and village that helps me grow.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_3BU345P46RAEPEGKHMJB5CBWPA\"><\/a>\u201cThey ain\u2019t gonna see that coming,\u201d Simeon said, as the group relaxed their outstretched arms.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_B5CGBHZJUFB5PBIZJ3NJYKYNCQ\"><\/a>Wali smiled.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_AT5EVS3JP5B7JFGYOSVI6Y5N34\"><\/a>\u2018You own it\u2019<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_3GBRNFISIJEJVGUMXB2YNKMVVY\"><\/a>After lunch, campers gathered in a sunlit room. African art dotted the walls, along with student paintings that described strategies for coping with negative emotions, and a chart that listed the elements of culture.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_CCRVMTAVLNHT5L7DSBXMZ4UJS4\"><\/a>\u201cWhy do we have capoeira?\u201d asked Monitor Tarantula, a martial arts instructor from Huntsville. It was his first year at the camp, and he came to share a piece of Afro-Brazilian culture.<a name=\"RX45YCOP4JDOPFWZEIAPTS5BMM\"><\/a>The students chimed in, recounting how the art form was created by Africans \u2013 mostly from Angola, Mozambique and Zimbabwe \u2013 who were enslaved in Brazil.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_RX45YCOP4JDOPFWZEIAPTS5BMM\"><\/a>Capoeira is part of an art form called jogo, which means \u201cto play.\u201d As the campers found partners, Tarantula coached them on the cocorinha, a way to evade a move; the au, a circling move; and the ginga, which means \u201cto sway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_Z5ZG2OXO3BHLRD5I6FGTG5IN7U\"><\/a>\u201cSometimes things might be a little too much,\u201d Tarantula said. \u201cBut don\u2019t stand there. Sway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_MSADGHXW6FCQPIUACUOWFHE5M4\"><\/a>For Tyler, 15, the capoeira lesson wasn\u2019t just a way for him to learn Portuguese words or a new set of martial arts moves. It also taught him a piece of unaltered history, he said \u2013 unlike the kind he learned in Alabama public schools, or in his current school in Marietta, Georgia.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_M6CBN57HFJB4TH3R4DY2HZYMMA\"><\/a>\u201cBeing from Alabama, a lot of our history was lost, besides the Civil Rights history that we had from slavery,\u201d he said, noting that he was taught that enslaved Africans had come \u201cwillingly\u201d to America.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_IOSBKMI7TJHWFAXFBQMIZRGA7Q\"><\/a>Even though he doesn\u2019t see himself as much of a creative person, Tyler said drumming and dancing allows him to feel an unexpected connection with the Earth and with his ancestry.<a name=\"DNKP4EQU2RC3RMG33JD7R6IC44\"><\/a>It\u2019s empowering almost,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_DNKP4EQU2RC3RMG33JD7R6IC44\"><\/a>Toward the end of the lesson, Cruz-Banks led a group of older girls in song.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_3EAOQTBE4NDBRFA2PV25FVCYAM\"><\/a>\u201cWe who believe in freedom cannot rest until it comes,\u201d they sang, clapping and moving to form a circle in a dance called the Ring Shout, one of the rituals that enslaved Africans practiced in America.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_EJK7HGY4H5CSVC4OZCPAXPES3A\"><\/a>On the stage under a winding wooden staircase, Sylla led a group of drummers. Cruz-Banks and Schooley coached the girls to keep their eyes up, toward the drummers, as they stomped to the Kassa, a traditional harvest dance.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_HTUFBVFSWVHNDB7AWPLY5WI6NQ\"><\/a>The goal of the dance, a ritual of the Malinke ethnic tribe, is to be in sync, and Schooley wanted to instill that concept of community and collaboration in the campers.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_EIAPYMBURJFQ3ASN552STD4PSE\"><\/a>\u201cWhen you share this culture, you know it,\u201d Schooley told them. \u201cYou own it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_6F5OZP55D5C6BDU5PFUVSJ2E24\"><\/a>***<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_SM5MRJP5MRHTZIPO4PRAFIDEDE\"><\/a>As the day drew to a close, Schooley reminded students that they\u2019d head to the library Friday for rehearsal, and that they should wear shoes that work well with capoeira.<a name=\"RN2NPHSETNAELE5ZIXI4BIJUYM\"><\/a>The campers gathered into another circle and passed a stick in a clockwise motion, each one giving thanks for their instructors, and for each other. One camper said she was grateful to her teacher, who introduced her to the program.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_RN2NPHSETNAELE5ZIXI4BIJUYM\"><\/a>Sebriah, a ninth grader at Minor High School, hopes to become a counselor next year. She had already learned some drumming techniques at Black Star Academy, a homeschool group in Birmingham that she attended before going to public school.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_OBQCQUG4VBCJBGZJ6APE7MGXHQ\"><\/a>\u201cI learned the importance of knowing who you are,\u201d she said \u2013 a skill that, she said, can \u201cshape your future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_Y35FPNHLDNFVBKY4RKHJA37O74\"><\/a>Schooley beamed, recalling the bursts of creativity she witnessed over the week and urging students to find a pathway in life that fulfills them.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"InContent_Center_BNXDGFYN6ZAB3GKO6HBLHWGGVU\"><\/a>\u201cYour history is beyond the shores of America,\u201d she told the campers. \u201cThe rest of your story is in that rhythm.
