Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>The awards were established in 2018 by Writers Space Africa Foundation in partnership with the African Writers Development Trust, who have since then been holding the annual awards as the highpoint of the African Writers Conference. This year\u2019s longlist were announced on 31 August.<\/p>\n

The call for submission by writers started from 15 March to 1 July this year. A cash prize of $200 will be awarded to each winner along with a certificate. All submissions were also in English.<\/p>\n

Both awards considered pieces by writers from various parts and regions of the continent, and received hundreds of entries, although each entry offered a unique perspective.<\/p>\n

The entries in the African Writers Award were judged anonymously, and the judges included Nahida Esmail (Tanzania), Gankhanani Moffat Moyo (Zambia), Sabah Carrim (Mauritius), Nabilah Usman (Nigeria), Corona Cermak (Tanzania), Tamunomieibi Enoch (Nigeria), Patricia Peace Ejang (Uganda), Comfort Nyati, SDB (Zimbabwe), Temani Nkalolang (Botswana), Halieo Motanyane (Lesotho) and Namse Udosen (Nigeria).<\/p>\n

The longlist for the African Writers Awards for creative nonfiction included \u2018Becoming a Lazy Nigerian Youth\u2019 by Oluwabukola Olabode (Nigeria), \u2018Cape of Cubs\u2019 by Trevor Abekah (Kenya), \u2018Hills in the Background\u2019 by George Paul (Tanzania), \u2018Hope\u2019 by Joy Jonathan (Nigeria), \u2018Let my People Go\u2019 by Britney Muoghalu (Nigeria) and \u2018Number 27\u2019 by Kendi Karimi (Kenya).<\/p>\n

The rest of the longlist for the creative nonfiction were \u2018Piece of Mwihoko\u2019 by Isaac Kilibwa (Kenya), \u2018Spero Spera\u2019 by Praise Ebirim (Nigeria), \u2018Swagger\u2019 by NmaHassan Muhammad (Nigeria), \u2018The Watch\u2019 by Esther Diepiriye (Nigeria), \u2018This Town\u2019 by Ezimadu Ugorji (Nigeria), \u2018Thunder makes us Cry\u2019 by Shalom Kasim (Nigeria), \u2018Tsulisime\u2019 by Deborah Usidamen (Nigeria), \u2018Wahala, Like Bicycle\u2019 by Isaacoed Buchi Jamie (Nigeria) and \u2018With the Eyes of the Soul\u2019 by Marta Santos (Angola)<\/p>\n

The longlist for the drama category included \u2018Dusk To Dawn\u2019 by Gloria Akayi Asoloko (Nigeria), \u2018Fallen Empire\u2019 by Dave Chukwuji (Nigeria), \u2018Hello Lord!\u2019 by Halieo Motanyane (Lesotho), \u2018Homecoming\u2019 by Chetachi Igbokwe (Nigeria), \u2018Hope\u2019 by Ogwuma Aduma (Nigeria) and \u2018One Jungle, Multiple Shadows\u2019 by Oluwatosin Tume (Nigeria), amongst others.<\/p>\n

\u2018Breathe\u2019 by Pepita Mwanga (Tanzania), \u2018Delayed Dawn\u2019 by Rigwell Addison Asiedu (Ghana), \u2018Hope for the hopeless\u2019 by Issa Haruna (Nigeria), \u2018It\u2019s not ours\u2019 by Overcomer Ibiteye (Nigeria), \u2018Mettle\u2019 by Omotoyimbo Damilola (Nigeria), \u2018Nigeria Flickering Hope\u2019 by Victor Unwuchola, \u2018Of what we said\u2019 by Akal Mohan (Kenya), \u2018Sunrises\u2019 by Simbizo Faith (Tanzania) made it for the poetry category.<\/p>\n

\u2018The Crest of Sanguine\u2019 by Elias Denen Dodo (Nigeria), \u2018The slums of Mbayani\u2019 by Temwani Mgunda (Malawi), \u2018The victor\u2019s Psalm\u2019 by Edmund Elume Nanne (Cameroon), \u2018To etch light on a soul\u2019 by Joshua Effiong (Nigeria), \u2018Today\u2019s is not yesterday\u2019s twin\u2019 by Richard Mbuthia (Kenya), \u2018Waiting\u2019 by Isabel Nowemigisha (Uganda) and \u2018Weaved by Living Matters\u2019 by Sia Morweng (South Africa) also made it for the poetry category.<\/p>\n

Wakini Kuria Prize for Children\u2019s Literature also received children\u2019s literary pieces across Africa. The longlist were \u2018Beans Can\u2019t be vegetables\u2019 by Ogbu Eme (Nigeria), \u2018Bird\u2019s Melody\u2019 by Zola Dirwani (Zimbabwe), \u2018Grandma\u2019s Needlework\u2019 by Joshua Robertson (Ghana), and \u2018Hamood\u2019s Wish Tree\u2019 by NmaHassan Muhammad (Nigeria), amongst many others.<\/p>\n
