Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>Mr. Mbaye made these remarks while making a presentation at the just-concluded training of the parliamentary reporters on legislative proceedings and procedures.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe mandates of the National Assembly are lawmaking (amendment and enactment of laws), oversight (exercise checks on the performance of the executive and representation (amplifying the views and challenges of the electorates),\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

He added that the parliament is the communication link between the government and the constituents, and performs representation through parliamentary mechanisms or tools such as question time, debate on bills, policies, motions and statements.<\/p>\n

\u201cSection 109 of the 1997 constitution, establishes the various committees and are composed of appointed members to deal with areas or issues and report back to the plenary.”<\/p>\n

Mr. Mbaye further revealed that the responsibilities of the committees, among others include, scrutinising the executive and agencies, advice plenary on issues within their remits, debate and amend legislation, investigate and make recommendations on the budget of departments under their purview.<\/p>\n
