QUESTION OF THE DAY<\/p>\n
It should be recognised that the right to vote under the Constitution and the Elections Act\u00a0is not restricted to Gambians resident in the Gambia.<\/p>\n
Section 39 subsection (1) of the Constitution reads:<\/p>\n
\u201c(1)\u00a0 Every citizen of The Gambia being of eighteen years or older and of sound mind shall have the right to vote for the purpose of elections of a President and members of the National Assembly, and shall be entitled to be registered as a voter in a National Assembly constituency for that purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n
Section\u00a0141 of the Elections Act reads:<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Commission may make rules for Gambians in any foreign country to vote in a Presidential election.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hence any constitutional and electoral reform could only strengthen and broaden\u00a0a right already acquired by law.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
