{"id":2801,"date":"2019-11-05T14:31:32","date_gmt":"2019-11-05T14:31:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/gambia\/?p=2801"},"modified":"2019-11-05T14:31:32","modified_gmt":"2019-11-05T14:31:32","slug":"beakanyang-conlcudes-peace-conference-in-wuli","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/gambia\/all-news\/beakanyang-conlcudes-peace-conference-in-wuli","title":{"rendered":"Beakanyang conlcudes peace conference in Wuli"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>As part of its efforts to promote peace and social cohesion in the Upper River Region, Beakanyang on Saturday convened the first ever Wuli West Peace Conference\/Bantaba at Nyakoi Madina.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The forum brought together over 100 participants including traditional leaders, local political leaders, and youth and women leaders from across the district.<br \/>\nIn his remarks, the executive director of Beakanyang, Nfamara Jawneh, thanked participants for attending the conference.<\/p>\n<p>According to Jawneh, it has come to the attention of his office that since the change of government in 2016, communal conflicts have surged in the region. \u201cWe have realised that conflicts related to politics, caste system, animal encroachment into farmlands have all increased in the region over the years. We cannot continue to live in such unfortunate situation as a region,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n<p>He said that was why they have also launched a weekly radio program at Radio Basse called Peace Hour to promote political tolerance and pluralism in the region.<br \/>\nHe said the radio programme hosts National Assembly members from the region and members of Inter-party Youth Committee to dialogue with the people on the importance of maintaining social cohesion and harmony.<\/p>\n<p>He reaffirmed his organisation\u2019s commitment to promoting peace in the country especially in the Upper River Region where they are mainly focused.<br \/>\nHe disclosed that the objective of the Bantaba was to provide a platform for dialogue among the people of the district and to identify causes of conflict and map out strategies to mitigate such problems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s our hope that at the end of this forum, you will identify the main causes of political intolerance, conflicts and other factors undermining peace in your communities and also provide possible solutions to such problem,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking earlier, Seedia Jatta, the National Assembly member for Wuli West, urged participants and the people of the area in general to put aside their various differences and give peace a chance to prevail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolitics should not divide people as it\u2019s meant to provide people the opportunity to provide solutions to their development needs and aspirations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Board Chairman of Beakanyang, Mr Yahya Sumareh, thanked the International Republican Institute, IRI, for supporting the initiative.<\/p>\n<p>Momodou Jallow, a representative of the chief of Wuli West, said the forum was the first of its kind in the district, hailing the organisers for the foresight.<br \/>\nIURR governor, Mbemba Jabby, applauded Beakanyang for organising such an important forum in the district.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, there are many problems in the district most of which are politically related and urged participants to use the opportunity to resolve their misunderstandings.<br \/>\nHe urged the participants to take the forum seriously and to share the knowledge it with other members of their communities.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Jabby said there cannot be any sustainable development in the area in the absence of peace and unity among the residents.<br \/>\nOther speakers at the opening included the Alkalo of Madina who also welcomed participants to the village.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As part of its efforts to promote peace and social cohesion in the Upper River Region, Beakanyang on Saturday convened the first ever Wuli West Peace Conference\/Bantaba at Nyakoi Madina.
