{"id":2908,"date":"2019-11-07T18:28:30","date_gmt":"2019-11-07T18:28:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/gambia\/?p=2908"},"modified":"2019-11-07T18:28:30","modified_gmt":"2019-11-07T18:28:30","slug":"women-should-not-be-forced-prevented-from-family-planning-unfpa-country-representative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/gambia\/all-news\/women-should-not-be-forced-prevented-from-family-planning-unfpa-country-representative","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Women Should Not Be Forced, Prevented From Family Planning\u2019 UNFPA Country Representative"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"vc_row_inner td_uid_12_5dc458aa34d9d_rand  vc_row vc_inner wpb_row td-pb-row\">\n<div class=\"vc_column_inner td_uid_13_5dc458aa35091_rand  wpb_column vc_column_container tdc-inner-column td-pb-span12\">\n<div class=\"vc_column-inner\">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"td_block_wrap tdb_title td_uid_15_5dc458aa362c4_rand tdb-single-title td-pb-border-top td_block_template_4\" data-td-block-uid=\"td_uid_15_5dc458aa362c4\">\n<div class=\"tdb-block-inner td-fix-index\">\n<h1 class=\"tdb-title-text\">The United Nations Population Fund\u2019s (UNFPA) Country Representative Kunle Adeniyi, has told members of the National Assembly Select Committee on Health, Women, Children and Disaster Relief that as a UN Agency, no woman should be forced to practice family planning or be prevented from it.<\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"td_block_wrap tdb_single_content td_uid_26_5dc458aa47f3e_rand td-pb-border-top td_block_template_4 td-post-content tagdiv-type\" data-td-block-uid=\"td_uid_26_5dc458aa47f3e\">\n<div class=\"tdb-block-inner td-fix-index\">\n<p>The UNFPA Country Representative made the remarks on Tuesday Noviember 5th 2019 at the National Assembly in Banjul.<\/p>\n<p>The Chairperson on the NA Select Committee on Health Ousman Sillah, said Mr. Adeniyi and his team were invited to share their mandate in the country, their areas of intervention and their expectations from Government as their partner, with the NA Select Committee in particular.<\/p>\n<p>The UNFPA has been in the country for over four decades and is present in over 150 countries across the globe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur belief is that no woman should be forced to practice family planning but in the same vein, no woman should as well be prevented from practicing it,\u201d he said<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Adeniyi said people know the issues which mirror one another, saying they majorly deal with cultural issues some of which are difficult to break.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe number of children and when and how many children a woman should have, should be her own informed choice,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking further, Adeniyi said their strategic plan for 2018-2021 is on three transformative results which contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by ensuring universal access to sexual and reproductive health and rights and reduction of maternal mortality.<\/p>\n<p>The three he said are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>a) zero maternal deaths;<\/li>\n<li>b) zero unmet need for family planning, and<\/li>\n<li>c) zero gender based violence and harmful practices towards girls.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The idea, Adeniyi said, is to have zeros in the aforementioned areas which is geared towards the attainment of the SDGs; that in 1990 the Gambia had over 1,000 women who died out of 100, 000 live births which is a massive and huge loss of lives; that generally people agree that women do not have to die during childbirth.<\/p>\n<p>On their mandate, Adeniyi said the work of UNFPA is to deliver where every pregnancy is wanted, make every childbirth safe, and make every young person realize the fulfillment of their potential; that it is the responsibility of Government to make sure that citizens have the means to safe and healthy pregnancies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery child birth is safe with maternal health and maternal mortality.
