Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>The Gambia Writers\u2019 Association of The Gambia last Friday commemorated World Book and Copyright Day at a ceremony held at Alliance Francaise along the Kairaba Avenue in Kanifing.<\/b><\/p>\n

The event is celebrated annually on 23 April each year. The World Book and Copyright Day also known as the International Day of the Book or simply the World Book Day, is an annual event championed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to promote reading, publishing, and copyright.<\/p>\n

The event brought together young emerging writers, veteran scholars, educationists and members of the Young Writers\u2019 Association of The Gambia and The Writers\u2019 Association of The Gambia.<\/p>\n

The commemoration by WAG was a feature discussion and brief lectures by renowned Gambian writer and educationist, Nana Grey Johnson, who lectured participants on the subject \u2018Krio \u2013 Retracing the Footsteps of an Extraordinary People,\u2019 while Aja Ramatoulie Othman Jallow lectured participants on \u2018The Aku Marabout: A minority Group threatened by Extinction\u2019.<\/p>\n

Dr Cherno Omar Barry of the International Open University, who doubles as President of The Gambia Writers Association, also gave a lecture on \u2018Indigenous Knowledge production to preserve our languages,\u2019 while author Musa Bah, a staunch advocate of promoting indigenous Gambian languages, took participants through \u2018Writing in Our National Languages \u2013 Benefits and Challenges.<\/p>\n

Professor Adoulie Saine also gave a discourse on \u2018The Socio-cultural Evolution of the Saloum-Saloum\u2019.<\/p>\n

The commemoration was marked with a small scaled book exhibition, Nana Grey\u2019s Krio Engagement & Other Stories, Edward Francis Small Watch Dog of The Gambia, \u2018The Newspaper in The Gambia\u2019 and \u2018I of Ebony\u2019 by prominent author Nana Grey Johnson were all on display.<\/p>\n

Other books displayed included: \u2018The Dictator and the Heretic\u2019 by Momodou Sallah, \u2018Le Cimetiere Ne Prie Pas\u2019 by Baba Jallow and \u2018Quand Le Singe Parle Roman\u2019 by Baaba Sillah.<\/p>\n

As it is customary, a World Book Capital is chosen each year by UNESCO. Accra, capital of Ghana, has been designated as 2023 Book Capital to carry out program of activities to celebrate and promote books and reading.<\/p>\n
